Rare video: New island emerges off Japan coast after volcano eruption
The Japanese coast guard and earthquake experts say a volcanic eruption has raised a new island in the seas to the far south of Tokyo.
Pictures filmed by the Japanese coast guard showed clouds of heavy smoke, billowing steam and waters roiling over the newly-formed crater.
Advisories from the coast guard and the Japan Meteorological Agency said the islet is about 200 metres (660 feet) in diameter.
It is just off the coast of Nishinoshima, a small, uninhabited island in the Ogasawara chain, which is also known as the Bonin islands.

Who can resist the early warnings? A new island popping up from nowhere, [spewing harmless SULFUR]. Only one thing for it: go up a volcano or two and have a look. You'd think that the Japanese, with all their experience of explosive disasters would have been seismically measuring below ground activity – or maybe they were studying tourist figures, or simply busy catching up on sleep. You can't breathe sulfur! It's likely to kill you! – You would think that Japanese TV would have known that! Volcanic Ash (and I'm not an expert) probably has high levels of Sulfur, which everybody should have known about earlier. Much earlier.

is this not the second volcanic island that has been formed in the last century? Yes it is. I wonder what they will name it. Islands forming from volcanic eruptions are a rare occurrence indeed in our own life spans. Lets hope it does not disappear from the water action at sea, so that it can be named.
