Iran resistance group seeks to build on non-terror status
http://www.euronews.com/ The National Council of Resistance of Iran is getting closer to transforming its image after it was removed from the list of Foreign Terrorist Organisations by the United States last Friday.
The Iranian opposition group also known as Mujahadeen-e-Khalq (MEK) was removed from an EU terror list three years ago.
Addressing a gathering in Brussels, the group’s leader Maryam Rajavi answered the question of the group taking up arms again as unlikely, but not impossible.
“Since 2001, the Mujahedin have stopped their military activities. From now on, everything depends on Iran’s circumstances in the future, and the rule of law. Military activities are not on the horizon,” said Rajavi.
There is still the question of the fate of former Iranian Mujahedin – 3,300 people who have been living in Iraqi camps without full freedom or status
as Iranians or refugees.
International help is needed, according to Rajavi who said: “The future of those in Liberty Camp depends on European countries, the US and the UN’s Commission for Refugees. If they get their act together, they can either disperse these people across European countries or even transfer them as one big group.”
Rajavi is not the only one asking for EU involvement.
Daniel Fried is a US ambassador and special advisor on Camp Ashraf, where the Mujahedin lived before being transferred to Camp Liberty. Fried has been speaking in Brussels and Geneva, asking European countries to help with resettlement.
Iran has denounced the US decision to remove the National Council of Resistance of Iran from the terror list. Tehran considers the group a front for the militants who supported and fought for Saddam Hussein during the Iraq-Iran War and carried out a number of atrocities against Iraqi and Iranian Kurds.
