Last week Albanians cast their ballots in the countries election, choosing to re-elect their Prime Minister and giving the Socialists a third consecutive term in office. This is obviously significant for the countries domestic politics, but it could also have ramifications for Europe and Albania’s ascension to the EU. So in this video we discuss the countries history, what these election results mean and if Albania could be the EU’s next member state.

Really? Letting Albania into the EU would open the doors to the Albanian mafia to their best market yet…

This country is under estimated because it has very cheap realestate, just look at Croatia where now the locals can’t afford to buy houses since the fall of Yugoslavia.

Macron is right. The EU really needs to tighten up the rules. Get rid of the unanimity on every little thing. Give the Union some real responsibility and the ability to act on behalf of the whole. Every time they add some fractious new member, that simply gets harder and harder. Straighten the thing out, then look to admitting new members.

They are west Balkan and very developed and trade in ports there is amazing opportunity for EU enlargement

I think that before enlargement, the EU should reform it’s democratic system and have general treaty change. I am not against albania, it’s just that the EU itself needs reform

The problem with the EU in respect to integration of new states especially in Eastern Europe and the Balkans is that during the 2000s I feel that such states were assimilated into the EU out of political expansionism more than anything else, countries certainly didn't meet the democratic criteria nor economic for that matter. And now more so than ever is the EU seeing a backlash from that (ie: Poland's rise of the extreme right, Hungary's stance on homosexuality and Orban in general). I mean let's be honest here, as if corruption doesn't exist in Bulgaria, Romania or Hungary etc, the EU now is just being cautious to make sure to not to commit the same mistake again, that's why it may seem they are being especially strict with Albania's accession to the EU, for which frankly you cannot blame them I think. Prior to the accession of Romania and Bulgaria into the EU, I highly doubt these countries were more developed both economically and democratically than Albania. Another last point would be the influx of Albanian immigrants to the West upon granted membership, which we already saw with Romanians and Bulgarians, again the EU is weary of that scenario.

Yes it's unfair, but politics are rarely fair….and this is coming from someone's who half Albanian

    February 27, 2024 at 3:49 pm

The main problem for the EU with Albania is the huge heroin export from that country. Albania is the western world's largest exporter of some drugs, particularly heroin. The TLDR, sitting outside Europe in England, may not be aware of these things.

  16. @Robert_H.

    February 27, 2024 at 3:49 pm

I would be for it. They may be Muslims with medieval ideas, but with a population of less than 3 million they are a state that can be managed. However, I see more problems with the veto power here. Hungary and Poland are already a burden for the European community. We would have a similar problem with Albania. Albania's accession should therefore only take place when the veto right in the EU is overturned. A 2/3 majority or even a 3/4 majority must be sufficient to pass laws.

EU is in a deep sleep and the situation created in Ukraine showed this. But if the also Balkan gets into a conflict in 2022 it will start a full war in Europe.
Countries like Serbia who support Russia really wants this.
And the fact that Eu dosent support countries like Albania who are pro European shows that they arent aware of whats goin on.

    ALBANIA POPULATION 2.8 MILION

    700,000 Albanian -> Italy
    400,000 Grecce
500,000 Germany (work }26 paragraph low)
Other EU countries with Albania 100-300,000

Total Albanians outside county from 2.8 milion is about 1.8-1.9 milion in Albania you can find 1 milion people from this 600,000 over 60-65-70 years old (ready for retire 55+) and only 300,000 potential for emigrants but maybe only 100-200,000 are “potential emigrants to EU, and probably 80-90% goes to Germany from 200,000 Albanians !
So even if tomorrow ALBANIA enter in EU no more than 100-200,000 Albanians are coming to 26 nations of EU zone to live and work or study!

Problem of Albania is infrastructure (railways should be given to DB of Germans for 40yesrs use or other EU ) and two ports should be build or modernized (San Giovani di Medua and Port of Buna in Scutari) !!!

Albania is small , same is Montenegro (all 500,000 people) and small is even N.Macedonia (2.1milion people) and not all goes emigrants only age 18-40 not babes or ancient !
So make the calculations Balkans isn’t so much population to add to EU but maybe is only politic key to solve the soon entrance !

    Kind regards !

  24. @pauldamse253

    February 27, 2024 at 3:49 pm

I strongly disagree with anyone who says EU should be solely a economic union; While economic development is very much important, there's not much point into being rich if big parts of your population are sad and resentful. This conservative vs EU liberal values is not the complicated debate that some make it out to be, alignment of a people with EU liberal values is STRONGLY correlated with the happiness index of those people. In my vision, the main goal of EU is not economic, but rather to influence and homogenize ideology and values across the continent. Two fully democratic countries, both with this kind of values will never wage war with each other, this is the way of peace, of prosperity, of the future.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk

The honest truth is that Albanians will like whichever country is on our side. Turkey is also included
In the era of nation states no European country has ever been on our side. Since the beginning of Balkan nationalism, European powers have been constantly working against the Albanians, undermining our right to exist, to be considered European and to be considered worthy of nationhood. They called us outsiders, Caucasians, cultureless, savages, barbarians, Islamists.

Russia, Great Britain, Germany and France wanted to create a pure Greek state at the expense of the Albanian population. They initiated and supported the extermination of all traces of Albanian history and culture to the point of making Albanians in Greece ferociously deny their identity.

Russia and Austro-Hungary supported the expansion of the Serbian state way beyond territories inhabited by Serbs and other European powers let it happen.

Every time Italy and Germany used to be engaged in Balkan politics, we were their first to be invaded.

Not so long ago Albanian populations were divided among 5 states, oppressed, shunned and belittled for who they are and what they represent.

This situation continued until recently with the Kosovo war and the armed confrontations in Macedonia.

So what's there to like? When the Kosovo ethnic cleansing started, European states were all talk and no action. They were far more willing to engage the Serbs in endless discussions than protect the Albanian population. We saw what happened to Bosnia.

If it weren't for the US, Kosovo would still be at war with Albanians being massacred by the Serb army.

To us the US is a guarantor of peace and stability (even though this might not apply to other regions).

We're kind of like the Israelis. A nation surrounded by pure hatred and our best ally for the moment is the US.

As soon as they resolve their corruption, which is widespread among all the countries mentioned in the video that want to join the EU and that they address their political polarization, then they of course should be allowed to join. Albania is slowly becoming a more democratic country, but it is happening very slowly, in that pace it is probably not possible in at least 10 years, but the pace can be accelerated if the political and the people's will exist.

Imagine leaving 2 million people outside the union. I recently had a conversation with a German university staff member for my studies application and she told me after she had heard that I am an Albanian : you don't need a visa right ?! And I am like, yeah I kinda need one. She was surprised. A lot of people in EU think we are part of EU when unfortunately we aren't. It's sad. I have heard this European dream crap when I was a kid and now am 30 and still hear the same shit. Future future future. Never there though.

France acting bad against minor countries isn't the first time we seen/heard. They don't want to apologize to African countries for the horror they caused while getting wealthy themselves . Second is while NATO was bombing Serbia in 1999 france dropped their bombs in the Adriatic see before even reaching Serbia, I never expected Frace to recognize Kosovo I was surprised when I saw that I guess USA,UK and Germany whispered it in their ear and now we have them agaisnt Albania it's okay for Albania to assist them in ongoing wars around the world but not to join EU. Macron and everyone else who supports you you can really go fck yourselves

Earlier this week, a trade war broke about between the US and Canada. But the EU, a more Canada-aligned ally, appears to have a pretty muted response so far. So, in this video, we’re taking a look at the escalating US-Canada trade war, how it’s pushing Canada towards the EU and how the EU is responding.
