Since we wrote and animated this video, there have been reports that Russian forces have made more more progress in Soledar, to the north of Bakhmut. if Soledad does fall, then Ukrainian positions in Bakhmut will come under significant pressure. However, as we mention in the video, even if Bakhmut does fall, at the current rate of advance Russia is unlikely to capture the remaining Ukrainian holdouts in Donbas (Kramatorsk and Slovyansk specifically) any time soon, and the basic premise of this video – that Russian advances are pretty minor relative to the cost in terms of materiel/personnel – still holds. Nonetheless, apologies and hopefully the rest of the video is still interesting and informative!

Russia isn’t going to overrun the rest of Donetsk anytime soon. Russia is also able to manufacture new shells and missiles at a sustainable rate of replacement (albeit not at the rate they were firing last summer in Luhansk). People want exciting news about one side or the other making dynamic advances or precipitously collapsing, but this war is set to be a long horrible mainly attritional slog, with only intermittent major developments on the battlefield. Even the big stories are exaggerated – Russia didn’t bother defending Kharkiv and withdrew from Kherson before a real siege took place. And last summer when Russia was advancing, they finally took Lysychansk and then halted from exhaustion without sweeping through the rest of Donbas like everyone thought they would. It’s all grim grim grim

Ukraine will be fine if they keep up pressure on logistics. As long as they don’t get reckless and keep softening big targets by taking all the little ones, they’ll have room and time to breathe and maybe take Crimea in that time and if/when NATO gets involved, as long as the line isn’t pushed northwards, Russia will be totally caged as Putin knows he can just unleash nuclear armageddon regardless should the opposite happen. He is more afraid of NATO expansion and what it heralds beyond a temporary military humiliation that Putin’s circle would just cope and call a hard fought testament to Russia’s might (lmao) than a temporary partial Ukrainian victory until round two. Short of a falling out in Moscow causing a power collapse, directly shadowing Russia’s beating heart would prompt nuclear winter because it gives Putin the excuse of Russia’s sovereignty in his nuclear policy for defense. Advancement to take Northern Russia should be done after Russia has somehow been disarmed but not too late or they might use them anyway. The risk is still carried that tactical nuclear weapons will be fully deployed and detonated by Russia’s nuclear forces but without a first use policy on either side and simple speed paired with the superiority of Western intel gathering and precision ordinance, it could go either way.
