Not sure what sources besides media articles that are cited you are using, but a lot of info presented is quite outdated.
1) Moldovans and Romanians are the same nation with the same language, culture and religion. I moved in 2016 from Moldova to Romania and the vast majority of my high school colleagues also live in Romania. There is no need to learn a new language and no issues with culture shock – it is the same culture. If you are interested on the differences – these are influenced by Soviet forced russification. Romania is a diverse country and there are differences between regions of the country – Banat, Ardeal, Moldova, Bucovina and so on. The differences between Moldovans from Republic of Moldova and Moldovans living in Romania are close to zero. This is why so many Moldovans have Romanian citizenship – estimated to almost million out of the total of 3 million – total population of the Soviet Moldova without Transnistria.
2) In 1991 when I was 14 Russians have not fled Moldova to Transnistria. Actually Transnistria historically was not a part of Moldova and was used by Stalin to annex Moldova from Romania in 1940. That is why it might be a surprise to many but the number of Ukrainians in Transnistria and Moldova was larger than Russians. A large number of Russians was moved to Moldova and Transnistria during the Soviet era, probably in place of the Moldovans that were forcefully removed to Siberia and Kazakhstan. My grandfather was sent to Siberia after Soviet "liberation". A good piece of evidence for this is the fact that even the first President of Transnistria – Smirnov – a Russian born in Russia was moved to the region in the 1990's, when Soviet authorities really wanted to increase Russian presence in the area. Another interesting fact is that many Ukrainians that live in Moldova are so russified, they do not speak Ukrainian in their families and they support Putin's intervention of their motherland. This is also valid for the majority of ethnic minorities living in Moldova – Bulgarians, Gagauz people – all of them speak Russian only even in private, they forgot their own language. Many Moldovans from Transnistria especially also lost their ethnic roots and speak Russian in their families due to economic reasons – the only way to get a job in Transnistria is to speak Russian. The biggest hypocrisy in the language issue is that if you speak Russian in Chisinau (capital of Republic of Moldova where there is only one official language – Romanian) the majority of people will reply yo you in Russian without any issues. Meanwhile speaking Moldovan/Romanian in Tiraspol (capital of so called Transnistria) almost no one will be able to talk to you – Transnistria has 3 official languages formally – Russian, Ukrainian and Moldovan (Romanian using Cyrillic alphabet – another "bright" idea coming from Stalin and his people.)
3) Transnistria main export partner is EU from the moment DCFTA was implemented between EU and Republic of Moldova. Exports to EU is about 40% and exports to Russia is about 5%. Concerning imports it is certainly a different story – Russia from the moment of Transnistria inception is giving free natural gas to Transnistria and is billing Republic Moldova for it, this is another blackmail used by the Kremlin in its relationship with Moldova. In fact in 1992, at the peak of the Russian – Moldovan wa, Russia totally blocked gas to Moldova and as a result Snegur, the shitty President of Moldova, signed a ceasefire agreement with Yeltsin of Russia. This is also important because the ceasefire was signed between Russian Federation and Moldova – this tells you a lot about the parties of the conflict. The 14th Soviet Army was fighting Moldovan militia, because Moldova did not have an army in 1991-92. I witnessed those events.
4) All Russian referendums in the area were organised the same way as the Crimean one or the referendums that will be organized soon in Zaporizhzhya or Herson.
5) The only reason Transnistria is not involved in the Ukrainian war is the fact that Transnistrian are very afraid of the Ukrainian army that will need less than 24 hours to totally take under control the area – Transnistria is a narrow strip of land with a maximum width of 20 km. Demographically Transnistria lost more than 40% of its 1991 population – the majority of youth is living to European countries or Russia. I was a University professor in Chisinau from 2000 to 2015 and I had many Transnistrians as students – the vast majority of them had not returned to Transnistria – in the worst case scenario they remained in Chisinau or moved to the West – a nice life is also the main drive why people move peacefully – even the kids of Russian politicians are living in the West and are not returning to mother Russia, even the most popular Putin propagandas people buy vilas and property in the West while speaking on Russian TV's about the beauty of Russian and how rotten the West is.

If Romania goes out of their country to help in another war, NATO's article 5 will not be activated… Russia won't attack Moldova but chances are good that they might built a land bridge to Transnistria.. After all Transnistria wants to be part of the Russian federation… I think this would not happen in diplomacy is followed and this war stopped ASAP… Irrespective of what western media say, Russia is going slowly but surely, in the process taking out the best soldiers of Ukraine…

First of all
1. Transnistria IS BACKED BY RUSSIA (Hence the USSR references).
2. They wish to be part of Russia (Russian Federation; because of UN sanctions)
3. Ukraine has blocked boarders with Transnistria. So anyone has to go through Moldova to get in.
So, NO. They are not a TARGET, by any means. They are an OBJECTIVE however. Which is completely different.
Russians, Ukrainians, and Moldovans are being oppressed there by WESTERN INFLUENCES.
Which totally debunks any WESTERN HYPE…

Transnistria is so little and isolated from Russia (between Moldova and Ukraine). There is only a small russian army based there (~1500 soldiers). Could the ukrainian army defeat the russians there and take the territory and give it back to Moldova ?
@nervgear2254
March 3, 2024 at 7:22 am
False, it's more likely Ukraine will intervene in Moldova/ Transnistria than Romania because it's in their interest to stop any russian attempt to go to Odessa. Russia isn't interested in going west of Transnistria into Moldova proper and we romanians can't act on our own because of NATO. Plus, NATO won't allow us any intervention even if Moldova was conquered entierly.

As a Romanian from Bucharest, I think Moldova should recognize Transnistria's independence and join us. That is, after Russia will retreat from Ukraine and once we are sure they will not attack Ukraine. The nationalists in you might oppose this idea, but hear me out, on the maro level this are like 10 breakaway small cities with a predominant Russian population. This region is quite poor, even for our standards. On a micro and personal level, our minorities in that region (~31% if I remember right?) are better under Putin's dictature then under war. Get rid of that Russian puppet state, it's only slowing everyone down. Maybe we can convince EU and Nato to give us a hand in order to economically stabilize the rest of Moldova. Russia is stuck on 20th century while smaller states are doing far better by embracing globalization. I'm so tired of this troglodytes mentality. States should only be for public administrations and services in this day and age.

Transnistria is already a Russian proxy with Russian peacekeepers in it and has been since the 90s. So what you really mean is that Transnistria is NATO's next target. And there are, indeed, rumours that Moldova is preparing to launch an assault on the separatists with Romanian (i.e. NATO) help and to overrun the Transnistrian and Russian forces, much as the Georgians tried to do in South Ossetia in 2008 and the Ukrainians would have tried again sooner or later in the Donbass. It's true that Russia has so much of its forces engaged in Ukraine right now that it would very likely fail to prevent that.
