Flight MH17 tragedy. ECtHR accepts Ukrainian and Dutch lawsuits against Russia

On January 25, the European Court of Human Rights decided to start a trial into a case of Russian culpability in the tragedy of the Boeing that was shot down by militants over Donbass in 2014.

We talk about iconic moments from tragic history:

The Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur flight was shot down by pro-Russian terrorists on 17 July. 298 people died (283 passengers and 15 crew), of whom 196 were Dutch nationals.

✔️For objectivity, Ukraine transferred the authority to carry out investigations to the Netherlands and the International Group. Investigators found that the Boeing was shot down by DPR militants from the Russian Buk.

✔️The propaganda media of the Russian Federation promote absurd versions – from the attack of a Ukrainian fighter plane to the fact that the plane was strewn with corpses before takeoff.

✔️The investigation lasted for 6 years and on March 9, 2020, the District Court of The Hague started to hear the case.

✔️In the fall of 2020, the ECtHR combined three cases into one. The first is Ukraine versus Russia in the Donbass issue. The second is Ukraine versus Russia over abducted children. And the third is the Netherlands against Russia on flight MH17. The case has been called "Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia."

✔️ On 23 June 2022, PACE stated that “… MH17 was shot down by a Russian Buk.

✔️ On November 17, 2022, the court in The Hague issued a verdict: the liner was shot down from the Buk air defense system. Igor Girkin ("Strelkov"), Sergei Dubinsky and Leonid Kharchenko were found guilty. They were sentenced to life imprisonment.

In September 2022, Russia withdrew from the European Convention on Human Rights, but the ECtHR may consider prosecutions against it for actions taken before that date.
