Noting to do with neutrality, you can’t join NATO when you have a territorial claim on another country. So even now the Republic of Ireland would be on dodgy territory because of its constitutional aspiration to colonise Ulster or Northern Ireland.

The only reason Ireland and the Nordic/ Scandinavian countries have a higher standard of living than the US is due to their assumption that NATO (basically the US military) will protect them from a Russian attack or invasion, therefor they forgo joining NATO or refuse to pay the minimum 2% of their GDP that all members pledge. Of these countries only Iceland and Norway were NATO members before Russia invaded Ukraine and neither ever spent the 2% of their GDP all members pledged. If fact, Iceland doesn't pay anything. I didn't vote for Trump in 2016 or 2020 but I'm going to this year. He had a point about the US being taken advantage of by Europe. All the money the above mention countries can spend on healthcare and education should be going to American citizens. There's no reason for the US to be in NATO

We in the west are bombarded whit propaganda about the threat of the Russians while at the same time we build military bases all around them in the form of NATO expansion nato is not a defensive Alliance it is extension of USA military aggression all around the world we only have to look. back at our recent history to see that the Second World War the war that was to end all wars was so profitable we would be mad to stop them never taking in to account the human cost of this madness and they want us to join this genocide of the human race

Ireland cannot join nato.
Reason 2 nato countrys cannot have a conflict of interest meaning Northern Ireland. So would be totally against the rules of nato.

Along with many other comments on Varadkar being Taoiseach and not president, the last Ireland video had a horrendous pronunciation of Fianna Fáil and Celtic football club. The Schengen area video also had the Iceland flag in place of the Norway flag, and these are the only three videos I’ve watched this week. A small bit of fact checking goes a long way when acting as a news outlet. Enjoy the videos but the review process needs work!

This article paints a very rosy, almost propagandistic, picture of ROI's role in WW2. It then goes on to blow smoke up our collective arses, ROI will never join NATO because it believes it already gets all the protection it will ever need for free, from UK & USA
@danielprefontaine4030

We dont have enough men or money to maintain an effective army.
British army protects our airspace.
The benefits for us are financial, while they're benefits are having free reign over sovereign airspace and irelands expansive economic area.
So, in short, it serves us both.

Irelands independence is guaranteed without treaty or even a second thought. if any invader went near Ireland the USA and UK would undoubtably move to protect it. quite handy for Ireland to have it`s independence guaranteed without having to ask for it.

If you look at nato countries a lot of them have relatively high defense budgets. The US of course being the largest and also the main funder of NATO. Even our neighbors to the north are having a super hard time pulling their end of it because of who their prime minister is.. big kudos to Ireland for trying to stay peaceful right now even with the most documented war of our time going on. IF they wish to join I’m sure they would be accepted by the other members to complete the process. However, I’d much rather risk it with Ireland joining NATO than Ukraine. Ukraine joining would be a major major headache. The UK and Ireland are VITAL to Western Europe because if the East decides to move West and threaten the United States and or Canada then they can help make that western advance a major headache.

They have no military The British do everything with Ireland. Ireland needs to build its military and we need Ireland. A huge amount of Americans are of Irish blood. The Irish government has a problem. They know they must spend 10x of current defense spending annually. National prosperity depends on EU membership and free trade. They are struggling bc the public, a sizeable minority, object. The far left, anti NATO anti defense brigade are very loud and quite aggressive. THEY are also anti prosperity . MANY of these folk, not all, but many are anti EU as well. The government cannot permit a small group of committed ideologues to derail the country's prosperity. The anti NATO ppl will never admit this, but they ,if given a choice, would exit the EU to protect their precious, sanctimonious vision of neutral Ireland. They don't understand, or even care, that Ireland's prosperity is completely tied to global free trade, the international rules established post WW2 and of course, the EU which is the most successful peace and prosperity project in our part of the world. This is why the government, in June 23 is holding conferences around the country to debate security, threats and other related topics. They are trying to educate the general public many of whom are still happy with the myth that neutrality saved us In WW2. It didn't. It was pure luck, boosted by Hitlers mistake of postponing hos planned attack on Britain ( and Ireland) to attack Russia instead.
@marykennedy2051
February 12, 2024 at 6:24 pm
To cease being neutral and join in with your colonizers in wars of aggression is inexcusable. To do so betrays the Constitution of Ireland. If Ireland does this it will stand for nothing.

I think it's easily explained in a historical context, we were colonised by the British Empire – after independence we didn't want to side with Britain – considering the previous generations just suffered a famine caused by British rule – no Irish government would have been taken seriously if they did so – many people here today support Palestinian independence, Ukrainian independence etc – because we still see the same correlations – NATO seems to be a military entity rather than economic peaceful body – so in my opinion I'd prefer to remain neutral as an Irish person.

I say if Russia makes a move on Eire, we should let them get on with it. Ireland can't have it both ways. A so called rich european state, who won't even aquire a limited navy or air force. Do they think dear old blighty will come running to save them from attack? We should tell them bo**ocks.
