My Okinawan grandparents made it to 95. I don’t remember the bitter citrus but one can NOT forget that icky green goya…NOT a fan and neither were my grandparents. We had lots of rice, fruits, danced, walked, played tennis with my Grandfather’s ‘sports club’, after tennis, it was hot green tea, some type of cookies the ladies brought and socializing. LOTS of festivals to attend. Okinawan culture and language are different than Japanese. The Okinawans are indigenous to this island which was taken over by the Japanese in the late 1870s.
Okinawans sway gently and easily for a very long time just like palm trees….one reason they live so very long is their resiliency to whatever adversity thrown their way. The largest civilian casualty was Okinawans during WW2. My grandparents hid in caves with my mother and uncles while the Americans and Japanese waged war upon this tiny island.
The western diet has caused a tremendous amount of obesity, acne, and health problems for this tiny island which is overwhelmingly still U.S. military. Some of the land has been returned to the original owners. Things are becoming more Okinawan again instead of American military.

I did an entire video on why their diet isn't the key to their longevity, it's just a popular myth for the news to focus on.

    If anyone is interested.

If you search for Japanese life expectancy by prefecture you will find that Okinawa is just BELOW average life expectancy for the country. So about half the prefectures can be expected to live longer. And if you look at life expectancy for Asian Americans is is about 3 years longer than Japan. Not saying the U.S. is healthier by any means, just that there is something messed up with the "Blue Zone" statistics.

I live here and can say in general life is simpler in that people overall are very friendly and you don't have to go too far to get your basic needs. The only issue they have now is the modern world has caught up with many of the youth. They eat alot of fried foods and their obesity rate is the highest in Japan. The old Okinawan diet was mainly sweet potatoes and anything they could find in reality. My Okinawan in laws told me the old diet was the 'no food' one back in the '50s.

I grew up there. Grains of sand the shape of stars, caved lagoons to swim in with blue damsel fish, island hopping, orange pink sunsets, most delicious food in the world, and the gentlest, kindest people.

euronews U talk – U-talk tackles sexism

Published

on

“I am Ana from Lisbon. I would like to know how can we put an end to sexism and to the prevailing social differences between men and women which is an ongoing problem in the world?”

To answer Ana’s question U-talk asked Belgian feminist and member of the ‘Dare to be feminist’ collective Laure Juteau to comment:

“Sexism is all about putting people in boxes as soon as we meet them, labelled either ‘man’ or ‘woman’. As soon as they deviate from that, even a little, they are quickly reminded to get back into line and play their role.

“This exhibition goes back to 1470 with an incredible pauper’s Bible which tells Bible stories in comic book form,” …
