The US has a reputation of only keeping it's promises only as long as the partnership is directly beneficial to itself and not a moment longer.I understand the skepticism because America can just as easily alter the deal again after the war is done and just say "well why do you even want to be in NATO the rest of over" as the new excuse to dangle that carrot forever

Look the reality is due to the structure of nato admitting new members for purely strategic reasons when they are not ideologically aligned with the rest of the block is a mistake and how nato ended up with its turkey problem in the first place.
Ukraine is not there yet. While it seems to be headed in that direction especially in the western parts of the country, in the more eastern parts with a higher percentage of ethnic Russians it is less ideological aligned with the principles that make up the alliance.
I think this is the right call even if it is not the easy call.

There was no falling out. NATO simply reminded Zelensky who's boss here. Yes, Ukraine will be a member, but it cannot join until the war is over because NATO has to know exactly what territory it is guaranteeing and where the lines are that if violated would trigger an allied response.

What does escalation in this context mean? Russia will invade Ukraine? Russist will use cluster munitions, bomb schools and hospitals, children playgrounds, infrastructure during winter? What can they do?

Russia and Ukraine could be the next North & South Korea who have been technically in war for decades. That means Ukraine can never join Nato on that Technically. Ukraine is also full of corruption which is a big job to fix. Don’t get me wrong I want Ukraine to join NATO but it looks it could be blocked for decades or more.
