If Wagner was a pain in the ass for Russia leadership, Putin would a sign a decret that would have merged Wagner into military commandment long time ago and you would not hear about Prigozhin . Retreating can also be part of the strategy making believe to your ennemies that you are weak.

That the Russian army might withhold ammo and support from Wagner isn't surprising. But then, it isn't like Russian forces s are over-supplied in the first place. So I wonder how much of this is deliberate withholding versus genuine across-the-board shortages. Very likely a bit of both, I think.
I also think that, based on his recent pronouncements, Prighozin is preparing Wagner for if / when Russia has either a coup or slides into some kind of civil war. Both seem very plausible.

Wagner’s tactics are wasteful and ineffective. But Russia just does not have enough tanks, armoured cards and trucks to make combined arms attacks a real option – so infantry attacking on foot with artillery support is what they’ve got. It’s not going to get any easier for them.
