euronews reporter – The Dutch face austerity
http://www.euronews.com/ The economic and financial crisis has overthrown governments all-over Europe. In the Netherlands, the political parties have clashed over austerity measures. And while the outgoing government increases the retirement age and VAT, the Dutch are becoming ever more disillusioned…
Danny, a construction worker from Rotterdam is the latest victim of the economic crisis after he was recently laid off. With a family to support and austerity measures looming on the horizon, the future is looking distinctly gloomy.
His friend, Folkert, was in the same situation four years ago, when the first ripples of the worldwide financial crisis were being felt. Rather than let his situation get the better of him, Folkert decided to work for himself.
Now he revels in the freedom of being self-employed. He can take holidays when he wants, negotiate his own pay and answers only to himself -the only downside is actually finding the work.
Folkert de Hoop explains: “It is very difficult to find work in Holland now. I come from the north and for me it’s about 150 miles to get here.”
Danny Blankespoor adds: “My situation is that I was fired so I still have six weeks of work left but after that I’m unemployed.”
Folkert de Hoop: “I don’t like it: the age that we have to stop working (for retirement) is 67 and in Greece it is 55.”
Danny Blankespoor: “Something has to be done about everything it can not go on like this. Going back to the guilder would sound great.”
Folkert de Hoop: “Maybe it would be good for the euro-zone to separate the poor countries from the richer countries to get better value from it because now the rich countries are little by little going down and that is not good.”
It is little wonder construction is suffering when you take into account that 15 per cent of all office buildings in the country are empty. In some areas, 50 per cent stand vacant.
Tax incentives on mortgages initially lured families onto the real estate market. House prices rose year on year but then the bubble burst and property values plummeted.
Private debt in the Netherlands breaks all European records and in spring, many feared the budget deficit could get out of control.
The centre-right wing government has reacted by implementing severe budget cuts. An unpopular move met with some resistance but a job well done for others.
Jan Kees de Jager, Dutch Finance Minister, talks to euronews about what he hopes to achieve:
“We have put through the austerity measures, we are making all the necessary measures to show the whole world, all parts of the world, that the Netherlands is still an austere country.”
In Rotterdam Harbour, we meet John, a jobless skipper, and his daughter Stephanie. She should have her mate’s licence next year, keeping up the sailing tradition which has been in her family for four generations.
The Netherlands is facing the gusts of an anti-Euro storm as the tone of the far right and the far left is decidedly eurosceptic.
John and Stephanie are members of the Dutch ‘Socialist Party’ and they believe the euro is to blame for their lives going off course.
John de Waard says: “The reason for the crisis is obviously the introduction of the euro. Today, the Netherlands is helping all these other countries, amongst them is Greece and obviously we’re paying quite a lot for them. That’s really bad for our country and that’s why we are in this crisis.”
John lives on 722 euros a month while Stephanie gets around 695 euros. A relatively low amount when you consider the high cost of living in Rotterdam and the government’s austerity package means even choppier waters are afoot.
Stephanie still lives at home, which means the calculations for their social security allocations will change meaning less money for both of them.
John’s home is surrounded by paintings of ‘his ships’ and at a time when VAT, the pension age; utility bills and medical care are all on the rise, it’s easy to understand his nostalgia for ‘the good old days’.
John de Waard continues: “Individual contributions – for medical care and such will increase in a dramatic way: Today I have to pay 246 euros a month, which will go up to 400 euros and as a result, food banks; where you get free food, are becoming increasingly popular. We’ll all will end up there.”
Stephanie de Waard, John’s daughter, believes things have changed as a result of the euro: “I think since the European currency, since the euro, everything has become a lot more expensive. All the prices have doubled, or worse.”
John de Waard, Unemployed: “At the time when I started sailing, a sailor tattoo cost me 5 euros, now it costs 150 euros!”

By the way some numbers for Greece: Youth unemployment 60%, overall unemployment 25%, Mean salary 400€/monthly. Is this Europe? No we were better before europe, keep your Northern Richness and fuck off!!
Cheers to everybody and sorry for my bitter words.

The other day a lad from my job was fired having a notice of 2 hours. At 13.00 on Friday they emailed him to go take his last check since he has 2 hours left in work. All these ofcource happened because of the crisis, and so as i read before in a comment You "Rich Northern Countries" do not feel nice beeing in Europe. Oh how you think we Greeks feel about beeing in Europe? We were the target of all negativity and vile comments in Europe no nation deserves this. Rather be poor than humiliated.

Well as a Greek watching this video, I would like to say a few things. First of all the retirement age in Greece is 67 not 55. I work in as an IT engineer and have Bachelor and two master's in Computing, after 7 years in the same work i get 750€ per month and i work 07.00-15.00 5 days per week. Some of the days i have to stay more and ofcource i don't get paid for the extra work. If I argue with the boss on this matter, his answer is there are thousands out there begging for your job.

wow, im watching this keeping in mind the latest economic numbers from Holland (jan 2013). Massive debt, plummeted housing prices, 15% youth unemployment, 7,5% overall unemployment, consumer trust is at an alltime low, break down of the social system. Yeah great to be in Europe! We (richer Northern countries) will go down, just like Spain, Greece and Italy before. keep dreaming Europe, sleep tight. See you on the other side…

I have to comment to this, i was in a part of this video with my father and i have to say, that the way this video is set up it looks like we are blaming the Greek people for crisis in the Netherlands, but they cut a whole part of the interview, so i think this is not fair.. We had to give our opinion about the crisis and they asked us questions about it, after that they paste and cut it, now we look like some bunch of fingerpointers or something.. I'm just saying…..

Don't be fooled by sensationalist media; Mr. Mikos down the street won't benefit one bit, most of the money will just go to the wrong people again. And as much as I am against the crude budget cuts here in the Netherlands: just compare the hours the average Greek works compared to the Netherlands. And then consider that they want to raise that by as much as 12 hours a day, 6 days a week.
@Caellest89

I'll tell you the stories we know about Greece in comparison with my country. Please inform me in more detail if you wish (send me a PM). In Greece the retirement age is like 55 and has to go up to 65. Here in the NL it is already 65 and goes up to 67! We cut down costs, although it hurts many, there aren't many complaints, we face it…while what we see from the Greece is a lot of complaining and not really cutting costs…in fact, there are a lot of corrupt government agencies…
@Leviwosc
February 19, 2024 at 3:49 am
We, West-Europeans; the Dutch, the Belgians and the Germans, get in financial troubles because Greece is a bottomless well where we keep throwing money in. Why? Because the Greeks made it a national sport to NOT pay taxes, to be corrupt and to spend more money than that they earned.
We West-Europeans; we fools, keep sending money to Greece! We're not an inexhaustible provider of Euros. We don't like to support people who don't care about rules, dignity, decency, law, austerity and diligence!

February 19, 2024 at 3:49 am
I am sorry guys but there is a misunderstanding about Greeks! Please don't buy into biases against Greece. The age that Greeks get pension is not 55 but 65. This is ridiculous and misleading. In Greece there is an option FOR SOME PEOPLE to get earlier their pension but then it will be a very lower amount of money. Greek people are like all other Europeans. We have to be joint with solidarity, we have to unite, instead of creating cliches and hatred among us!
@whiteonyx4
February 19, 2024 at 3:49 am
Cliffnotes: we have to give money to the EU (even after we already pay more than we recieve from the EU normally). We are a small country so that's a lot of cuts per person compared to other nations. Our goverment is now forced to get rid of/lessen some of our humanrights we faught for for ages…to pay for other peoples problems…'great'. Sorry but at some point the dutch people will have enough, being part of the EU or keeping your freedom and rights.

So you're saying that the value you place on gold is based on the value ignorant people from our past placed on it?
@YouriCarma
February 19, 2024 at 3:49 am
Because:
Gold is the ONLY money the rest is credit. Gold is the ONLY money the elite rely on. Gold has been around as money for thousands of years.
Gold's history learns us that societies based on Gold survived for ages, others did not. Gold Will Be The Last Man Standing.

In the Netherlands not only the journalists don’t understand what’s realy going on economicaly but neither do the politicians.
They do understand the word ‘austerity’ tough and they were happy that this came up because finaly they had somtin they could talk about.
