Economically the EU may be able to deal with it short term, but long term, politically, no.
An independent power on its doorstep that doesn't pay in or buy in to any of its institutions is what it wants and has wanted to avoid. Especially with the voice of disapproval from Eastern Europe and increasingly in Italy and France, growing.
Don't get me wrong, the UK will suffer from a no deal Brexit, but I think the calculation is that COVID is such a large hit this year, that a no deal will just be absorbed politically within it, and one can rebuild fresh after in the post-Corona world. Meanwhile, the EU has lost its influence and legal standing in the world's 5th largest economy, not to mention any money paid in.
It's ultimately why the last demands by the EU are to strip away any benefits from the UK's independence after leaving. It is impossible. There is no choice for the UK, it is submit or leave on WTO.

the UK wanted to be free of Europe, so let them be. NO DEAL!!! normal tariffs like other contries without a deal, so less export to Europe, we do not want to pay extra except for those product that we can only buy in the UK and those will not be many and high costs for brittish citizens in the UK. We will all feel pain financally but after a very bad marriage for 40+ years this is a welcome divorce! trade lines will shift and the UK will buy more from other none EU countries. I still think the brexit is the best thing happening to the EU!

On paper EU can survive the no deal better than UK. But the problems is EU is not a logical generated machine. It is made up of several independant countries. And each has it own selfish way of managing their own country and each country bad management can hurt the EU. For example Greece and Italy will be Greece 2.0 soon if it doesn't change or allow intervention and just admit they sucks at managing their own country economicly.
@joaogoncalves7762
February 20, 2024 at 4:25 am
I realy hope there is no deal!
There wont ne much of a problem for the EU. The losses are aceptable (the crisis because of covid will be much worse). But for the UK it is the loss of all the other countries markets within the EU. They are headed for a disaster.
And i'm saying this being portuguese from a touristic region, the Algarve wich depend much on the british tourists.
But why do i want a hard brexit?!
The world is just starting a new cold war between 4 major powers in a process of test to the transmission of power between those super powers much like what hapened between the British Empire and the German Empire before world war I, and it hapened many other times in history. The process will hapen between the old powers USA and Russia, and the new powers China and India, and will last for next 2 to 3 decades.
Like in the last cold war many countries will be forced to pick sided, and there will be many proxy wars. If the EU colapses each european country including Germany is too small to resist and european countries will be devided by spheres of influence between the major powers. Considering the old european rivalries and the price of loosing the comon market as in a hard brexit way would destroy european economies that we should remember that before the EU, relied on colonies.
Most probably wars would be fough in Europe once again.
So i prefer the EU and Britain to learn the lesson trough an hard brexit that sometime later can be repaired, and avoid the EU colapse.
The EU is the only way for the european countries to navigate in the peace possible considering what is comming. And also the only way for the european countries to remain in the developed world.

honestly, in terms of the EU, Brexit is like Britain has come along and broken their leg, it will heal in time.
The EU however, cut off Britains arm on their way out.
Trade between the UK and EU members will NEVER be as good post-Brexit as it was before. 27 countries together can manage consumer goods demands much easier than 1 alone can.
