Day 1 Highlights – European Athletics Indoor Championships – Istanbul 2023
Day one of Istanbul 2023 gave us plenty of drama and excitement from start to finish.
On the first full day of the competition at the European Athletics Indoor Championships, we saw the first medals being won as well as plenty of incredible moments.
Nafissatou Thiam and Adrianna Sulek had a sensational battle in the final event of the women’s pentathlon. Both produced World Record performances, but it was Thiam who would prevail, claiming a hard-fought gold medal.
The phenomenal Jakob Ingebrigtsen set a new Championship Record, retaining his 1500m crown despite a strong challenge from Neil Gourley.
the women’s Pentathlon reached its thrilling conclusion with a World Record being broken by Nafissatou Thiam.
Pedro Pichardo was untouchable in the men’s triple jump final, winning his second consecutive indoor title with an unbelievable jump.
It came down to the final lap in women’s 3000m, as Germany’s Hanna Klein overtook fellow countrywoman Konstanze Klosterhalfen to win a well-deserved gold medal.

It's almost like it was meant for us to get that battle between Thiam & Sulek. The championships are in Istanbul, where the world record was set 11 years ago & there was another amazing battle down to the wire that day between Dobrynska & Jess Ennis that ended within 50 points (5013 to 4965). 11 years later, again in Istanbul, Thiam beats Sulek by 41 points.

Nafi Thiam is not Flemish! (There'd be nothing wrong with that, she simply isn't. She's from Namur, in Wallonia). Anyway, she's just absolutely brilliant!!!

i'm not a specialist but sulek's technique doesn't seem pro in the end of her run. it's a world record but seems like she could cut half a second more if she ran properly

Sułek vs Thiam competition was amazing to watch. That's what we call fight till the last minute and never give up attitude. Both breaking world record and the last 200m from Sułek was just wow.

Daryll Neita & Finals! On form, should've finished ahead of Swoboda, it's become an issue! Congrats to Kambundji!
