How Portugal went from COVID Gold Standard to the World’s Worst – TLDR News

Last Spring we made a video explained how Portugal succeeded in managing the spread of COVID, doing far better in the first wave than neighbouring Spain. This year it’s a completely different story, with Portugal having the worst COVID death rate in the world. So in this video, we attempt to explain what’s going on in the country and how they went from a gold standard to disaster.

the blame goes to the politicians as per usual, they invested double the funds on TAP (A failure of a company that brings an insane amount of defic for our country every year but for 0 good reason our politicians keep sending money to it, some say that's one of the places they use to do shady deals) then on SNS (Health System)

  2. @davida.yorkson3397

Well…. The blame lies in a lot of places, ranging from the incomplete revolution of the 25th of April (where there was a political revolution aided by the military but the population to this day still lives by a lot of norms from the old regime); the profound distrust between the government and the people (everyone, from very early, hears and sees a system that is mostly deaf to people's actual needs, a system where having friends in high places is essential to get anywhere and anything done), a severely weakened national health service (there are hospitals in the country known for being bad and stories of people dieing from suspected bad conditions in said hospitals) and a very aged population that has very little money, knowledge and mobility (mostly because governments have consistently made it very hard for younger people to stay in Portugal [be it the high prices we cannot afford or literally telling us to leave the country] driving what has been named the "brain escape" where our educated and promising young people just leave the country in search of better conditions). Portugal is still a very weakened country, still very much tied to the old regime and lagging behind most of the EU yet our leaders think they can just pretend the country can compete with France or Germany and act as such. Let's e honest, Portugal's Democratic era has lasted for less than 50 years, literally, it's in its infancy.

I mean I am from Portugal and I can say corruption ran the first wave, limiting hospitals to 1.5k test in a day, that giving low numbers of Covid-19 and I remember in the start of the pandemic when It wasn't that serious a lot of people got sick, including me with covid symptoms but they refused to test us, because they issued a limit in testing. In the second wave they went from 1.5k tests to more than 30k per day that's why the higher numbers and number of deaths can be a incognito, I can't say if the number is real or not… Because I had this guy from my town who was shot 7 times in the head and reported as covid 19 death, so I can't say that X people died…so yeah corruption from the left…that's how it feels to live in Portugal "Venezuela of Europe".

You know, I don't get why this channel constantly ignores Czechia… Look at the Czech response to the pandemic in spring 2020 and the situation there in spring 2021. If that's not newsworthy, I really don't know what is…

  9. @shadowraven4221

    February 21, 2024 at 4:15 pm

The main anti lockdown argument is :

"look see the virus isnt that bad barely any deaths"

What these people fail to realise is that that is the virus if a whole country is in lockdown, if the lockdown is lifted this is the result, and it gets even worse once the hospitals are full and cannot treat the severe cases anymore which result in overwhelming fatal cases.

You talking about Portugal situation when you should be talking about england situation,, but once more , we, Portuguese, gave to the world a big lesson, how to fight the pandemic, we just hoppe the english to not come this year to Portugal, because last year the situation got worst after the english come to portugal in hollidays, after september, it was a chaos. If I was the President of Portugal, nobody that comes from england should be aloud to come in Portugal during this time, because we all know the english do not respect anyrules and less the covid, and do not follow the rules of a country. Do not talk about the others as if you were a exemple to be followed.

    February 21, 2024 at 4:15 pm

Socialist government, that's how. And by following to the letter what the WHO says.
Portugal was never the best in the world on this situation, it just lied and manipulated information to foreign countries until it wasn't possible to do it anymore. And on top of that, it blames the Portuguese people for its failures. The Socialist, Antónip Costa's, Government never took any responsability and never prepared anything for this pandemic despite all the time and patience that the people gave to the dacronian and unconstitutiomal policies enforced by thos terrible government. After this Portugal will bankrupt and much more will die from what's coming.
    Not what this video says.

Earlier this week, a trade war broke about between the US and Canada. But the EU, a more Canada-aligned ally, appears to have a pretty muted response so far. So, in this video, we’re taking a look at the escalating US-Canada trade war, how it’s pushing Canada towards the EU and how the EU is responding.
