Thanks for all your brilliant feedback! We're planning on starting a bi-weekly series where we take a full episode to dive deeper into each of these groupings. Our Patreons are currently voting for which grouping we should discuss first, so expect to see the first video in the series next week – Jack

p.s. A bunch of people seem to be comparing this video to one by CGP Grey. Despite being a huge Grey fan, I had completely forgotten he even did a video on this topic. Regardless any similarities are probably because both of us based the video on a similar diagram, one that neither of us created – https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Supranational_European_Bodies

I wonder if the UK will ever disband, and form a "British Union" of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland (reunified) as equal partner nations?

    In addition to those:

    1. Switzerland-Lichtenstein’s monetary and customs Union

    2. NATO
    2.1 Partnership for Peace

    3. OSCE

    4. Associated Trio (Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova)

    5. Open Balkan (political and economic zone of Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia)

    6. CSTO (Russian NATO-ish) – Armenia, Belarus, Kazahkstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan

    7. Lublin Triangle – Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland

    8. Commonwealth of Independent States (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazahkstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan)

    9. CISFTA – All CIS members plus Ukraine

    10. Three seas initiative – Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania

    11. Cyprus, Malta, and the UK are part of the British Commonwealth

    12. PESCO – EU’s internal NATO except Denmark and Malta

    13. The Three crown dependencies

    13. And then there’s the clusterfuck of Acronyms: EURATOM, EHEA, ECAA, Eurocontrol, ECAC, ESRB, CEN, EBU, EPC, EOC, CENELEC, ETSI

    13. And let’s not start with specific exceptions (Gibraltar) and the EU’s Outermost regions/countries (Greenland, Carribean netherlands, south american/african France, etc)

As a Dane I can tell that there is a historical bond with Baltic states. I believe most of the Scandinavian countries reached all the way down to the Baltic at certain times in history. A lot of the vikings settled there.
According to a legend, the Danish flag fell from the sky during a battle in Estonia and since then it has been the official flag of Denmark.

So it took 10 min to basically list the groups and quote the most salient sentence from their "about" section – still don't feel like I know anything about any of the groupings other than "they all say they're for the interests of the members of the group" – the council part was novel for me though and had a couple more sentences 😀

Besides the complex technicalities of politics and bureaucracy, this is my experience of our united Europe as an ordinary EU citizen. To be honest, living where I live helps make you feel European. I am a Frenchman, originally from Western France, who lives in Eastern Belgium, close to the borders with Luxembourg (20 minutes drive) and Germany (30 minutes drive), and crossing either border for whatever reason is nothing rare or special – just normal life. I live in a French-speaking town but our neighbors in the next town speak German though still in Belgium, and many of them are actually bilingual German-French. And of course the Luxemburgers have their own language which is basically a Germanic idiom with some French influence; in practice they are trilingual Luxemburgish-French-German, and these actually are the three official languages of the country. And I'm personally fluent in French (mother tongue) and English, I get along pretty well in German, and I'm at least able to read basic Luxemburgish and Dutch, plus notions of Spanish and Italian. In my region (Ardenne) we also see many tourists from Flanders and the Netherlands; these ones speak Dutch (though Flemish Dutch and Dutch Dutch are kind of different) and that's a fourth language and a fourth country not unusual to us in the area. So, for me normal life is about three/four countries and three/four languages, not to mention English. I naturally sometimes visit my native country, France, sometimes hundreds of kilometers away from the closest border. On these visits, living in a French-only environment for several days is now weird to me. And a word about Brexit: for me, bathing most of the time in the openness of Europe's multiculturalism, I just cannot understand why the UK – or at least England – has chosen to go backwards into self-imprisonment.
