Support TLDR on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/tldrnews
At the start of last week, the results from Catalonia’s regional elections began to emerge. For the first time parties supporting the region’s independence won out, giving more credence to the independence movement. So in this video, we explain what some in Catalonia want to break free from Spain and whether that’s likely to ever happen.

Imagine all Catalan-speaking (including its dialects) regions form a single nation….Catalonia, Valencia, Andorra, Sardinia, Southeastern France. Catalonia sends a lot of tax money to Madrid, but doesn’t get much from those tax proceeds.

We don't talk about Catalonia only, We say "Països Catalans" (which means "Catalan countries") where the catalan language is spoken: Catalunya (or "Principat"), València (or "País Valencià"), Illes Balears, Rosselló (nowadays is a region of France since the treaty of "Pirineus"), Andorra (nowadays an independent state) and a region of the iland of "Sardenya" called "l'Alguer". In all these regions the catalan language is spoken and they have their own dialect (for example, valencian). Historically those regions belong to "Corona d'Aragó". But Catalunya had always, until 1714, been ruled itself by a modern system without precedents in Europe, with modern rights that were supressed by Felip V, the first borbon king.
@pauribes3644
February 23, 2024 at 2:22 pm
Simply said, Catalonia is an historical nation which had ruled itself until the Borbon's conquest of 1714, then the repression began; repression to language, culture and catalan institutions.

How easy is to forget History, the Count of Barcelona existed during a long period of time before it was annexed by marriage. The rest well is history until the union of Castile and Aragon. After that in 1640 the same year Portugal regain it's independence During that time part of what is today Catalonia was revolting to get it's independence during some time it had some support from the French the " rebellion " or independence movement lasted until 1652 where the rebels were pardon and the king promised to respect traditional customs and rights in the future……….. Yeah

It's important to note that the President of Spain does not have the power to grant independence to a region. The only way of entertaining this is to reform the Constitution, and there is a written methodology for this.
@alwoolridge6377
February 23, 2024 at 2:22 pm
Easy. In 1980, they were simply a pampered region who wanted more privileges and investment than the rest of the country. They resorted to child indoctrination and low intensity terrorism (google "Terra Lliure"). They stayed silent when the central government piled privilege after privilege on them, and made noise when not.
And now they're simply brainwashed fanatics that learn an altered history at schools, so they believe they have been universally and historically mistreated by Spain and the rest of the world. Google "Institut de nova historia" (Institute of New History).

Here are some quotes from Pompeu Gener, one of the fathers of Catalan nationalism, which can be found in his book 'Heregias' (1887):
"I have doubted for some time that the majority of Spain is capable of progress. Only in the northern and northeastern provinces have there appeared real elements, in the race and in the organization of the country, which allow us to hope for the development of a culture like that of the nations of Indo-Germanic origin. In the center and south we have found that, unfortunately, the Semitic element predominates too much, and even more so the pre-Semitic or Berber element with all its qualities: slowness, bad administration, disregard for time and life, chieftaincy, hyperbole in everything, harshness and lack of halftones in expression."
"There is too much Semitic and Berber blood spread throughout the peninsula for modern science to be generalized to the majority of its peoples, for them to acquire a conduct in accordance with the universities of nature".
"Spain is paralyzed by the necrosis produced by the blood of inferior races such as the Semitic, Berbers and Mongols. The understanding of intelligence has produced here an agitating paralysis. From the South to the Ebro, the effects are terrible; in Madrid, the morbid alteration is such that almost its entire organism is a foreign body to the general European organism. And unfortunately the disease has already passed the Ebro, making a terrible prey of the virile races of the north of the Peninsula".
etc
Open your eyes: this is the origin of Catalan nationalism: this. If you go to the sources, this is Catalan nationalism. Hence the hatred for Spain. It predates Francoism and has common origins that border on Nazism. Spain has evolved, but the nationalists have remained in their reactionary delirium.
No Spanish party with parliamentary representation defends ideas that come from such ideological garbage, except for the Catalanists CUP, ERC and JxC.

HERE IS THE RECAP. It's pretty simple to understand: Catalonia existed before Spain, with its own language, laws, politics, culture, and people. Spain, as you know it now, is the reminiscence from 1492. Just remember that Spain had under his control the Netherlands or Portugal, besides South America. But it has been losing all its colonies and territories, just as in Catalonia. They have kept Catalonia based on repression and violence, such as the events with Franco. The future of Catalonia and Europe are nations, not countries.
