Published

With the UK leaving the EU fully at the end of the year there are some big changes ahead when it comes to EU waters. Before Brexit, most of Europe shared their waters through the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy – but that’s all set to change. In this video, we explain how the CFA works, the controversy around it and how Brexit’s expected to change this equilibrium.

In several of your videos (including this one) you keep referring to a Nobel prize in economics, which does not exist. There is the Sveriges Riksbank's prize in economic science in memory of Alfred Nobel, but it is distinctively NOT a Nobel prize as Nobel himself didn't want to give out a prize for economics and his living relatives today have declined the offer of making the prize an official Nobel prize.

  22. @dimfre4kske67

    February 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm

What you fail to mention is that the CFP was implemented because in the 70s fishermen were dangerously overfishing, and that goes for all fishermen in Europe, and that the economic disaster for the fishing communities caused then was due to that overfishing. Without the CFP Europe (not the EU) wouldn't have a fishing industry anymore today because the seas around Europe would be dead zones now.
Also you fail to mention that the UK government at the time allocated a lot of the UK quota to large, party friendly corporations without fishing boats and that those large corporations sold their rights to mostly French and Spanish fishermen which is why the UK fishermen get so few of the total amount of fish in UK waters.

  23. @hawky2k215

EU want all the shellfish. Plus want power and controls. I can sense they'll start the wars just to wiped out UK and get all the fishes for free job done. That if they haven't got an hearts

  24. @Snooper810

    February 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm

Many people dislike Europe failing completely to realize that behind this massively complex stage there is much more than your depiction of Europe. Remember this, in a good or bad way WE WERE, WE ARE AND ALWAYS BE NEIGHBOGRHOOD and the more we are going through, the more we will be BOND together.

We cannot change that, the best possible solution is to strengthen and especially improve what we already have rather than breaking down. Just look at Google map and type down Netherlands for example, you will see that it is completely surrounded by European countries, so would you trade with Japan, Indonesia instead, would you sell Herings to Canada?
Today the world is too different. We have such a huge global competitive market that you may only be able to compete if your are in a team.

I wouldn't say that by leaving the club you wont be successful, well who knows? I am curious to see how UK will perform in the next decades, perhaps better or not.
In my opinion, i am a absolute pro Euro but this doesn't mean that I'm fully happy of its policies and excessive centralized government. Europe is still in his infancy and constantly evolving but since the 2WW has been pretty successful.

One of the basic principle of EU is to level off the wealth in every member states. Unfortunately, in our life time we wont see this result but in the future, if EU will still survive, can be a very strong and wealthy continent.

  25. @ernestrogen4639

    February 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm

EU wont let fish from our UK fishing boats come into Northern Ireland with out a massive amount of paper work and Vetss certs while the same fish from the same UK fishing grounds fished by the French can come strait into NI. With out the same demands where is the level playing field the EU demanded. Further to that point the EU gave the Irish Republic 1 billion euro but Northern Ireland got Nothing. The EU dont understand the meaning of a level playing field. Even goods which have no tariffs on them are being held up at ports due to the large amount of customs requiered now to get anything into NI. Our steel has increased by almost 30% with the knok on effect being we in NI will be unable to compete in the UK market place. Lorry loads of fresh food have been held up so long at NI and English ports that they have been dumping it once it got here. Even the rules we must follow if we as importers want to keep tariff free status blocks cross border trade. We must prove where we sold said goods. All extra paper work which we the poorest in NI can not afford as all these costs will be past on to us. Big business are mostly ok for a while but remember extra costs of the goods we use in production will price many of them out of their main GB market.. Even to take an empty van on a ferry between NI and GB an internal UK route now needs GVM numbers before they board. It is not the simple custom Boris told us it would be. Another point is this it costs the same in office time to process customs for a shipping container as a small parcel. We in Northern Ireland already see the end result of that with most of our small online orders from GB now being refused and those who still send have increased by between 50% and 100% for transport to cover customs declarations time/costs.

its called theft the fish are in our waters and they like to steal them they believe it keeps us under their jackboots like in ww2 and 1 and previous they are playing the odds game and believe if they try enough times they might win one eventually, however we all know what a dreamer is.

So fishing quotas are not private property but instead assigned politically? Fatal mistake. In NZ quotas are property and traded on the market. Works great. When you got a long term interest in sustainability you get rid of the tragedy of the commons

  31. @davgat79

    February 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm

The UK government has used the fishing industryin the the UK for decades, giving the EU countries athe benefits of virtually unfetterered access to UK waters as one of their concessions to secure the City of London could remain as Dirty Money Central for financial dealings.

  32. @burtgummer8514

    February 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm

    And why are we?

  33. @Baronstone

    February 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm

Well, it looks like the EU has 4 years to find alternative work for its fishermen because after the 4 year adjustment period, the EU loses all access to UK fishing grounds. The EU fishermen are furious about the fact that they do not get to keep fishing in UK waters forever, and UK fishermen are furious that the UK government did not cut of EU access to UK fishing grounds. Overall I think the solution works for both the UK and the EU, though the EU negotiating team did the best they could when they realized that the UK would not give the EU access to their fishing grounds forever, still I believe that overall they will get raked over the coals because the EU fishermen will think they didn't do enough.

  35. @jacobrumpelstilskin4534

The EU certainly don’t care about how the excess fishing is done. They certainly don’t care that the fishing grounds are depleted by the super trawlers and don’t care that the seabed’s are being destroyed in the process.
Boris Johnson should tell the EU that’s is not going to happen in our waters.

    I told you so.
Over a month ago I commented that Johnson will need to jam up the ports ahead of the Brexit deadline Jan 1st, I didn't know how but I assured you he would. He announced this new virus strain just in time, even though his government and several others had known about this new mutation since OCTOBER and maybe even September as reported somewhere that I can't remember or find again. Now I discover that the Americans are telling us that we in the UK haven't even investigated it thoroughly because it's not quite so serious.
By the way, the true figure is 40,000 trucks as of midday Wednesday, not 900 as reported or even 4,000 as reported somewhere else.
Why are they continuing with this suicide even though they know the people of this little damp island are going begin to starve by the spring. Just watch. I'll put money on it that they have already printed the ration books in Kazakhstan where they can keep it quiet.

Oh yes, how did n industry that makes up 0.1% of the UK economy become such a big deal??????????????????????????????????????????????

  41. @AtlasofInfo

    February 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm

Let them keep the same fishing deal. Fishing will eventually be destroyed by the environmental activists. It's a good distraction from the real issue… competition laws! More collectivism and government controlled monopoly. The only monopolies that have ever existed were created by the government or an act of government. Competition laws or fair play laws were one of the biggest wins in modern history for collectivists.

  42. @richardjohnson9393

    February 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm

    BREXIT NO DEAL.
A deal will not be in the interests of British People, why should we let EU countries take our fish from our waters. It is time Britain stood up for itself and protected the livelihoods of it's own people, If we have control of our own fish in our own water our own fishing industry will prosper, and if other countries want to fish in our waters and we have enough fish to let them do it then charge them to enter and fish in our waters, it is called bargaining or dealing. If you have an abundance of something and it is in high demand this puts you in a strong bargaining position do not give up what is legally ours make the EU pay for it at a fair price.

  43. @haywardi1

    February 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm

A very pro brexit presentation. No mention of the fact that the CFP saved the fishing stock in UK waters without which we would have nothing left to argue over. And no mention of the fact that UK fishermen sold their quotas to EU fishermen. Finally the problems that are discussed with the CFP are political if the UK doesn't like the policy it could have worked to change it. Throwing up your arms and walking out is never the answer and as the presentation days is only 0.1% of GDP, so really? This kind of distortion of the facts is why there is such division in this country.

  44. @lougroves4637

    February 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm

How can you have failed to mention what happens in the Med. Also no mention of the London Fisheries Agreement?

  45. @brianflower5490

    February 23, 2024 at 4:26 pm

The eu. have repeatedly ignored their own rules set to ensure sustainable fishing and appropriate quotas ! This has not happened! The factory ships from Denmark, Holland and Spain all take everything from the bottom of the ocean ! This is not sustainable fishing . The CFP. have just agreed to ignore the levels set for 2021 and continue to destroy the fish stocks !
    THIS HAS TO STOP !
It would seem the only way to do that is for the U.K. to control its waters as the eu . couldn’t or wouldn’t .
The eu fishing fleets have already destroyed their own waters .( France states it spends 60/70% of its time in U.K. waters).
The U.K. must leave the stupidity of the eu. To control its own fishing grounds ,and by doing so may even help the eu. fisheries to recover
