Since he was elected, President Macron has been pushing the EU to achieve strategic autonomy in Europe and end their over-reliance on the US for security. So what would this look like? And how might recent conflicts and wars strengthen Macron’s case?

Strategic autonomy is impossible because Germany and France have no military. and they do not want to defend other countries against aggression from Russia

Unfortunately the poor Italians are slowly losing the will too exist, after witnessing the gradual weakening, and destruction of their once great Italy 🇮🇹. I'm afraid Italy has left it 10 years to late to vote for right wing national politics, unfortunately irreversible damage has been caused by years of incompetent Liberal politicians reducing confidence in Italians national pride and identity 😢, it's a criminal shame and France will also fail for the same reasons.

Where you are wrong. The Republican House is not anti-Europe,. They are anti-wasting US tax money on Ukraine – which has been part of Russia for more than a century. It is not part of the EU. It is not their responsibility. It is Victoria Nuland's war.

  4. @YourTamedLion

    February 25, 2024 at 12:12 am

It is enough to have to tolerate US war mongering under republicans like bush in Iraq.
But now this dependence on the USA also makes us tolerate the war crimes of Israel.

And as the video says both of these geopolitical fuck ups will harm us more than the USA. These US geopolitical games are against our own security interests.

It sounds like a good idea, but the EU is going to have to do something to increase it's GDP to bankroll it. The reason colonialism happened at all is that Western Europe simply doesn't have much to offer economically. It's too dependent on Russia for oil and gas, too dependent on the US for military aid, and too complacent when there's smoke on the horizon to let someone else handle it. America is going through some shit. And that's not hyperbole. There was a coup attempt. The US could at any point devolve into a civil war. Russia and China aren't doing much better. There has to be a reduction on globalism and a emphasis on self reliance or the instability of these powers will drag the EU with it.

I think I’d be more open to Strategic autonomy if it wasn’t being pushed by France. I get the impression Macron doesn’t want to get rid of the over reliance on America, so much as step into that role himself(for France).

  11. @xoanwahn

We should absolutely NOT move away from the US as a strategic ally, but we absolutely should build up our armies and defense systems because, until we do, we're not so much an ally of the US as we are dependants of the US. Once the US can actually look at us as a militarily equal partner, they will take our opinions more seriously.

Brexit was initiated by republicans who feared that Britain would join the Euro which could undermine the dollar as the standard world currency. So while there are elements of the US that clearly want to work with the EU, their are elements that are working against it. More autonomy is a good thing.

  32. @NaviRyan

    February 25, 2024 at 12:12 am

Here’s the European conversation around strategic autonomy.
France: we need strategic autonomy and it should only be French companies in charge.
Germany: that’s not fair what about the rest of us!
France: ok so how will you help?
Italy: we make pasta and speeches not so good at war.
Germany: we’ll deliberate for 30 years whatever it is the answer is no.
Poland: must kill Russia must kill Russia.
    France: …shit.

Much talk about the French and their autonomy..
But as soon as the USA speaks, the EU jumps..
The world has more respect for Russia then Europe..
And i should know, iam swedish..
We in Europe should ditch the USA, and build a strong European union/Russia without USA and their vassal puppet UK..

  35. @JamesPhieffer

    February 25, 2024 at 12:12 am

The single biggest issue is that the EU is made up of multiple independent states, each of which has its own priorities.

And while it's wise for Europe to build up its military capabilities so it doesn't need to rely on the US, much of the rest sounds like more French posturing. Eastern Europe isn't likely to see France as all that reliable based on its history in NATO, amongst other things. And the differences over Middle East are again more about France, which has been pro-Arab for decades, rather than the EU as a whole, where Germany, Poland, and other especially eastern European states have been much friendlier to Israel.

  36. @JamesPhieffer

    February 25, 2024 at 12:12 am

Wait – the French thought the US was unreliable?

The French actually thought someone else was unreliable?

    🤣🤣🤣🤣

  37. @taranbaze1448

    February 25, 2024 at 12:12 am

If Europe won't pay for its own security why should the USA?

  38. @ALFarrell-kv6ok

    February 25, 2024 at 12:12 am

Putin's wet dream come true. The EU and US divided. A united West needs strategic unity with non-Western democracies. "The Strategic Global Union of Democracies" to counter the BRICS.

  39. @Draktand01

    February 25, 2024 at 12:12 am

The issue is that for a lot of Europe, America is a more reliable ally than Western Europe.

  43. @alesh2275

    February 25, 2024 at 12:12 am

You’re overthinking it: Whether Strategic Autonomy is up or down just depends on whether France is more powerful than Germany or not. No need to blame the Americans for anything.

  48. @BladeTheWatcher

    February 25, 2024 at 12:12 am

Oh, don't get it wrong – the point is to secure the leader position for France, even if the trash heap is becoming much smaller.
With the US gone, France has the largest army and navy, so naturally they want the lead position – and use it to order French-made weapons on EU money.
And it will be still just a heap of trash with chickens on it – Europe's current army is not even a match for Russia's. Actually never was after WWII.
