It’s widely believed by the international community that Belarus’ recent election was neither ‘free’ nor ‘fair’ and that President Lukashenko’s 80% victory was illegitimate. In response, pro-democracy protestors have filled the streets in Belarus – but they’ve quickly been met by police violence. So in this video, we go through Belarus’ recent timeline, how the election happened and why protests have been treated so poorly.

UK AND CANADA SANCTION
BELARUS PREZ, 7 OTHERS
London: Britain has imposed sanctions on Belarusian President A.Lukashenko, his son and six other senior government officials following the disputed presidential election and a crackdown on protesters in Belarus
UK foreign secretary Dominic Raab
said on Tuesday that the sanctions were introduced as part of a coordinated approach with Canada " in a bid to uphold democratic values and put pressure on those responsible for repression".
The measures include a travel ban and asset freeze. Similar sanctions were imposed by Canada.
The British government said Lukashenko is the first leader to have been sanctioned under Brititain's new global human rights sanctions programme, introduced in July AP

EU diplomats at Belarus Nobel winner's home to prevent arrest
Nobel prize-winning author Svetlana Alexievich accused the authorities in Belarus of terrorising their own people as another opposition politician was detained by masked man.
Maxim Znak was the latesr figure to be seized in a systematic campaign by the govt. Of Alexander Lukashenko to round up leaders of a protest movement.
" What is happening is terror against the people,"said Alexievich, who summoned supporters to her home. " We have to unite and not to give up our intentions, she said.
In a show of solidarity with Alexievich, who won the 2015 Nobel Prize for Literature, diplomats from at least seven European countries — Austria, the Czech Republic,Germany,Poland, Slovakia and Sweden — joined her in her flat. Lithuania said the envoys' aim was partly to protect the author from abuse.
Znak was detained two days after opposition leader,Maria Kolesnikova, was snatched in the street by masked men. Znak's detention leaves Alexievich as the last member of the opposition's Coordination Council still active inside Bellarus. REUTERS

So did I get it right, that there are only a few evidences plus some active protesting by a relatively moderate group over elections held multiplied with what we think this regime is capable of ?!
I really would like to know how you come to the conclusions?! Is it because it admittedly looks very fishy and should be thoroughly investigated?!
But how certain are you that the tone analysis and the provided pictures/reports are not intentional?! (I mean I am certain I can get the police here to hurt me badly and then tell a tale, sure they should not hurt me in the first place but well …😞)
So I usually tend to look at it from the other side, and I would find it most infuriating if an election here was to be effectively "revoked" by an external force threatening with stuff on nonimpartial whims.
So yea please investigate, and pressure for investigation, but don't throw our democratic principles over board with it.

It is not true that there is no evidence. there is countless evidence starting from teachers rehearsing results the day before elections and observers counting those with white wrist bands and comparing those numbers to the ballot counts. even in the BLR embassy in london falsification occurred. not to mention the handing out of invalid ballots where the square next to lukashenko was already marked and the fact that if you don't vote your voice is defaulted to the current regime, as well as the fact that countless people have found their names on vote registers where they used to live in the very far past and have long since moved and re-registered at a different place. so b*tch please. no evidence?

@Ameya S I dont know where you live or what experience you have in western Europe. Putin is without any doud a strong leader. About freedom, he give more freedom to russians, than Lubashenco gives the Belarusians. As far as I know, both russians and belarusians are in general very peaceful and friendly to foreighners. Civil demonstrations are among the most peaceful woldwide, not compared to France Us or Middle east. No car burning, no stoning, no looting shops or destroying buildings at all. In Europe we can visit most countries without visum. Slavic people are good educated with a high moral and should remain slavic and decide their own leadership with free open votes, like we are used to in Norway and other western countries. Noone in Eu need to critisize wether Putin or Lubashenkov. Only their own citizens have right to do so. Democracy is a normal thing in Europe since a long time ago. But I agree about Putin, to be strong leader. Not a clown as Trump i Usa. Let the people in any nation deside themself what leadership they want by their own. But, i miss Michael Garbatshov who started the perestroyka. To finish my comment, i hope all people in Europe can visit each other as tourists in the future, respect other cultures and let own habitants decide their own life. God bless you all.

A lot of people died. We know about few victims who died on camera, but huge numbers died in the hospitals after police brutality, and even more will die or become disabled behind the police station walls.
There is a girl, who was raped with police bat by the women-policeman and she was so badly injured, that she will never able to have kids. She is 16 yo if I'm not mistaken.
Thank you for your work.
Long live Belarus!

They weren't released as a sign of peace. The Belarusian police can only hold people in custody for 72 hours before prosecuting them.

On 1974 the people in Portugal and all colonies went to the streets singing Grândola Vila Morena togehter Portugal ended in that year a very long dictatorship, and the five African colonies gained their deserved independence. 😉 @
