The cylinder is less able to be squeezed than a sphere. Steel and Titanium are the materials of choice for a submersible. The window cap is the weak point, notice how the designers avoided a cap in the stern. I'm guessing the window cap blew in, breaking the hull into several large pieces, because a hull implosion would've left a million shards. Composite layers delaminate. They must be examined after each dive with X-rays or other penetrating imaging. But how did the design allow for repair? It didn't. This submersible should've been retired. Carbon fibre sheets in an epoxy matrix are much better at withstanding extension/tension (internal pressurisation) than compression (external pressurisation). Finally, the Shuttle problem was never fixed – a Safety Officer answerable only to the astronauts has the final say. No Safety Officer = unsafe. Never trust the word of a capitalist, a politician, or a manager. They have very obvious conflicts of interest.
