Before the war in Ukraine, many people thought that Russia was a serious military superpower. However, almost immediately the Russian army underperformed expectations. Which led us to ask… does the Russian army actually suck – and if so, why?

We are only seeing the aftermath of skirmishes that leave individual buildings and vehicles damaged. This we are led to believe is all out warfare involing a auperpower whose credibility is at stake and are forced to introduce conscription. Compared to the 1940s modern weapons of war are capable of causing damage on a much greater scale.
However in WW2 we saw collossal damage and loss of life caused by the red army in Germany, Ukraine and other formerly occupied countries. Poland's cities were levelled within days.
This conflict is clearly minute in scale by comparison. It is media driven by powers that have undeclared motives. I'm not certain what they are but trillions are being made from the enormous prices being paid for oil, gas and everything else.

…and now, in the sixth month of the war, Russia, the worlds supposedly second strongest military, have managed to capture only 5% more of Ukraine's territory than in the first few days (and much of that they already had since before the war) plus only one town larger than 100.000 inhabitants (Severodonetsk). To argue (as some do) that Russias "limited special military operation" is going according to plan and schedule is nothing but a joke.

First question is, does it actually fail?
1) It is not easy task to defeat a 40 million populated nation who is determined to defend, and prepared for your attack, in a country as large as Ukrain. Any army would have hard time to achieve objectives.
2) There are quite logical reasons about Russia's initial setback and high casualities.
Wrong strategy based on wrong intelligence. Ukrain's internal politics changed very rapidly, in last 10 years, throwing the country from being a Russian ally to a potential enemy. It is not easy to edtimate the level of decessiveness of enemy armed forces and their loyalty to political leadership.
Russia is not the first or only country who made this mistake.
But it does not mean they cant win the war just because they started with poor strategical/tactical choices.
3) You go to war with what you have at hand. Not with what you would prefer to have at hand.
This is what Russian army had at hand. Most of the gear is out of date. This was not unexpected. But this is not a game changer. You dont need the best, if you have good enough in large numbers. In war quantity often matters much more than quality unless tech difference is immense. And as we see Ukrain doesnt have top quality gear either. Thus, equipment tech is not the big problem as it is. It becomes a problem, when you, with wrong intelligence, hence with wrong planning, go into a blitz without maintaining the required conditions for a blitz first.
Just see what Russia tried:
No carpet bombing. No destruction of enemy backfront. Enemy has safe interior lines to keep its supply, reinforcement transportation. Safe communication lines. Safe backfront to gather, train, organize its forces, plan, command, coordinate counter attacks.
Moved as fast and deep as it can in multiple, discontinious fronts, to keep high momentum. Aimed to dazzle and schock the enemy by weak but large and fast encirclements, expecting that enemy army will be forced to retrat in fear of being cut off, until it will have no place to run. Would perfectly work against a less decessive opponent.
Didnt deny reconnaissance superiority of the enemy. As Russian initial plan depended on high momentum, and therefore risked fighting in multiple small fronts in extreme positions, recon superiority given the enemy initiative for many successfull disrupting attacks on spotted Russian units in open field. Ukrain exploited this a lot.
Logistics failed. You will have thin and long supply lines owing to your prefered strategy. Unless it works to roll the enemy (due to shock) and rsistence is in serious levels, i.e. you actually fighting pitched battles (which you shouldnt) you need a special level of throughput with your logistics. The lines are far away from being safe and alternative roads are even more punishing than open one. Russians did neither have experience not necessary equipment for it. I wonder if any other army has either to offset all these odds.
Now, in absence of all these preparedness which makes a true blitz, in the face of determined resistence, an army needs far more superiority in equipment quality compared to the enemy. Not having one or two of the prerequisites may not stop you when you are far more superior to the enemy. But failing all of them and still trying to advance on a resisting enemy, with close/similar quality equipment, is bad idea. This would stop any military. When momentum is lost and cannot be gained back, this type of assault adds up casualities very fast.
None of them means that your forces are inferior to the enemy or your army is commanded poorly. It's just forced to something above its capacity.
You redeploy your units into a solid, continious line formation focus them in one objective instead of multiple tasks and shift to a slower, block by block advance. One target at a time. This type of warfare also neglects the importance of reconaissance.
4) Thus, Russians did it, and this considerably chamged the conditions. No more spectacular countercharges and disruptions, no more extreme units dying when trying to push without support.
Ukrainean army on the other hand, doesnt seem adapted itself to the new strategy. We observed many extreme positions they are trying to hold, which is no more necessary, and even possible. These extreme points helped a lot in the early phase of the battle, against Russian army which was making a mistake. But keeping these units where they are after Russians redeployed, is now Ukrainean mistake.
Remember heavy weapons can only used effectively at the hands of regular forces. Accepting causalities of regular units in the name of Ukrain, is not an affordable loss. Irregular units and militia wont make it, even if entire NATO keeps sending arms, for there is less and less regular units who know how to use them. You lose regulars, if you go toe to toe with Russian army.
You bleed, they bleed it means Russia is winning. Ukrain must stop bleeding and delay the decessive confrontations if they want to win this war.

February 28, 2024 at 11:14 am
First, only a small part of Russia military has been used in Ukraine and in a somewhat limited manner. It achieved a land connection with Crimea and consolidated the separation of Russian speaking parts. To project the results of this situation to conclusions about the overall capability of Russian's military is misleading.
@artyomarty391
February 28, 2024 at 11:14 am
The strongest thing about the Russian military is that soldiers dont have much to lose by dying. People live dirt poor, but they're extremely patriotic, and are willing to fight "for their country". Pride of their country and government is the only thing most Russians have
Most financially poor and uneducated Russians only talk about how America will soon collapse, how heroic Russian ancestors were in WW2, and that Russians are the smartest and bravest and cleverest on this planet and everyone is scared of us.
