Brexit: Immigration a divisive issue

Immigration is a big campaign issue in the run-up to Britain’s referendum on EU membership.

Pawel Blachut is from Poland. He – like thousands of others – came to the UK in search of higher wages, after Poland joined the European Union in 2004.

Pawel now runs four Eastern European food stores in Oxfordshire, in central England – and hasn’t looked back.

    The funny thing is when Polish people are out side Poland they say we are multiculturel and blabla,and in Poland they say Poland for Polish people only

    Minimum wages 4x more in the uk than Poland. That's why they come. Where can Uk nationals go in the EU where minimum wages are 4x more. Nowhere!

    no problem not to give the Poles work
    Englishmen have 8 years without work = Polish plumbers
    at school many children do not speak English parents sing benefits

    I really like freedom of movement and wish more countries were involved in it. And I 100% believe the UK needs more people (though ideally university graduates).
    But I really want the UK to leave the EU.
    I am so torn in two

    If they still recognise themselves as Polish, run a Polish language shop and simply only came here for the money then how are they then part of the "British community?", not blaming them for coming here but this makes them economic migrants, theres more about this than just money and taxes.
    Immigration is a problem because it has been massive and only seems to go ONE WAY and thats into liberal wealthy European nations, free movement is all very well but nobody is going to Poland or Hungary.

China’s economy grew 4.3% year on year in the second quarter, its weakest pace since late 2022, as weak domestic demand and a prolonged property downturn outweighed strong exports, increasing pressure on Beijing to provide more economic support.
