This seems to be a recurrent theme.
Everyone in Italy knows that the country's political system is dysfunctional and unstable and that it probably needs a constitutional reform. However, the only political parties that can actually pass this kind of law are going to be the majority, therefore the political parties that are in power. And obviously, the parties in power will propose law changes that will benefit them and their political parties, which is a clear conflict of interest. Honestly, I think that law changes like this should not be passed by politicians, they should always be up for a referendum.

Italy seems to be stuck in a political spiral of either having instability or autocracy. And so far at least, the people of Italy have decided to block autocratic changes and prefer the status quo.

I hope for the sake of Italy and it's citizens that they are able to clearly see that giving more power to one person is, and always has been, a huge liability for the long term prosperity and well being of a country. Sure, sole leaders have at times during history been good but it certainly isn't the norm, even if they were democratically elected

  9. @CKBmay10

    February 29, 2024 at 10:39 am

This reform makes sense! Why can’t voters elect the executive directly? Ok not a parliamentary democracy, but a presidential one: France and US are two examples of direct election, and they’re not fascist. It is more legitimate. In complex coalitions, that the UK has not experienced, voters do not know what they are voting for and unstable governments do not allow for long term policies to be implemented. The US Congress/Senate and l’Assemblée Nationale/le Sénat have their important role. Ask any international constitutional law expert. Why is it so bad to reach stability?. What would then become really important, is for MPs to be able to vote in conscience or representing their constituents, like in the UK or even in the US, so that the legislative can control the executive if things get out of line, and not let parties impose MPs to vote always along party lines (like in Spain where they are fined by the party and even expelled). So it might need a tweak along perhaps having two rounds and checking what’s the right super majority bonus so that it is not totally proportional (France isn’t) and guarantee MPs liberty of vote/open lists but it’s a good idea. Just that coming from Meloni some people don’t like it but if it had come from Draghi it would have made sense. Who would it harm? Clearly small parties used to have too much leverage in their position as king makers with a fraction of votes. Would you like to have a succession of weak governments managed by one of the big parties having to form a post electoral Frankeinstein coalition (with SNP+Plaid Cymru+Sinn Féinn+SDLP+The Greens+Lib Dems) acting as king makers with constant chantage to the PM…. That’s more or less what’s going on in Spain and believe no one wants this.

  10. @Matteo-zj3zw

    February 29, 2024 at 10:39 am

The electoral reform, we know, gives to the party that has a relative majority an overall majority. A similar law was already enforced in italian history. It is called "Legge Acerbo", of 1923, the same law that allowed Mussolini to gain total control of Parliament. I hope italians wake up in time…

    February 29, 2024 at 10:39 am

    February 29, 2024 at 10:39 am

"It provides for the party or coalition of the sitting Prime-Minister to be granted a seat bonus that guarantes them 55% of seats in parliament."

Ah, there it is. I was waiting for the catch. Didn't Mussolini propose a similar law during the early days of fascism to ensure his party would rule unchallenged?

  15. @theshadowdirector

    February 29, 2024 at 10:39 am

The parliamentary 'bonus' bite vote (which really undersells it) is by far the most batshit and completely undermines parliment's purpose.

While I am in favor of the idea of a directly elected PM for Italy, I have to agree with detractors on the auto 55% of parliament being a rather bad idea

  26. @ErenYega747

    February 29, 2024 at 10:39 am

People forget that Europe were essentially dictatorships for most of the history of the last 1000 years, democracy in this age is the exception not the rule. It’ll even be a stretch to say that democracy began 2 centuries ago, perhaps only a democracy in a substantial and meaningful way since the 50s or 60s

  27. @MrAlen6e

    February 29, 2024 at 10:39 am

Only Berlusconi would had dream to pass such reforms

  28. @keksentdecker

    February 29, 2024 at 10:39 am

this sounds beyond stupid, what is she even suggesting to be the advantage of the reform?!?!?!

  29. @IpernickTheGreat

    February 29, 2024 at 10:39 am

Meloni's party originates from the Italian Social Movement who wanted to pass a similar reform to return to Fascism (more specifically the Salò Republic). She is a national conservative on the surface but deep down her goals are the same as Almirante, Rauti, Michelini and other leaders who came before her: subvert Italian democracy.

  30. @lawden210

    February 29, 2024 at 10:39 am

Sounds like a presidential system, but the "president" is basically guaranteed support in the legislature.

The Mussolini particles have yet to be fully cleared from her party I guess.
