    Seems fair ! I'd add 3 points about this election, and one big uncertainty about the future landscape.

    – Mélenchon's voters are all over forums now, saying they hate Macron too much to want to vote for him. His base may be more left-wing & pro-immigrants than in 2017, where his more anti-system vibe made a third of them redirect toward Le Pen. They're more used to calling Macron far-right, which pushes them towards abstention ; but the close polls may push some of them to take part in the "Republican front" nonetheless.
    – Another key is turnout from people who abstained in 1st round
    – It's slightly cruel not to mention explicitly the other left-wing candidates. Had the Communists joined Mélenchon like in 2017 it may have made him the runner-up (but polls showed him losing heavily to Macron). The Greens also were a contender for hegemony for a bit but in the end, every party without an uncontested, charismatic leader lost big time in this election, and in the last few days most voters piled up around the 3 biggest blocks.

    Each election has its own flair now. The 2 historical parties may keep dominating local elections for a while, where known, experienced faces win it all. Let's see if Mélenchon finally takes over the Greens in European elections. Nobody knows what will happen in legislative elctions.
    It's all so unstable right now. Each party has big struggles to define their ideologies and preferred alliances. They're having a hard time managing the two left-right axis : socio-economic policies (correlated with anti-elitist sentiments), and societal issues.
    This was Mélenchon's last election. If his party stays loyal to his brand, the landscape should be similar coming into 2027. If it becomes more populist, or more social-democrat instead, the populist extremes may join, maybe making room for a green/center-left (Jadot, PS + maybe ex-Melenchonists) and a center-right (Edouard Philippe, Xavier Bertrand, Pécresse, Sarkozy) again instead of only Macron. This involves Le Pen losing and her party splitting, while the economically liberal ultra-conservatives (Zemmour + LR's right) would regroup.

    As a French and melenchon voter, I'll either not vote or for Macron because he still has a better consideration for women and gay people rights.
    Other than that it's pretty much the same.

    I could absolutely let my own opinions mangle with this, but can we still really consider Mélenchon to be far left? To me his program has become a real government program and his ideas are really not that radical

    TLDR guys, your French expert (who doesn't open the eyes while talking) in minute 5:18 about how the Socialist Party "has been totally destroyed"…"after many years of rule"… ,"Hollande's rule" doesn't seem to benefit from a good understanding of history (and I refuse to say that's because he is too young; no; he is just uninformed. In the last four decades, France has only been rule by the PSF for some time in the 1980s (Mitterrand) and then Hollande for a single, lonely, unique 5 year mandate in the early 2010s. France votes conservative. The dominant political discourse is veered towards a more glorious past, tradition, identity, national pride. Stuff that hinders progressive politics.

    I completely cannot vote for Macron. My hate towards what he did to the country and people's rights is stronger than it ever was.
    He put himself in this shit. Now he has to deal with it. He's the one who legitimized the far right over and over again. Telling the people to vote for him after all that is outrageous.

    Any of the two results will end up in riots and contestation from most of the french population.
    I also can't vote for Le Pen because she's very likely to dissolve the National Assembly, and then rewrite the constitution to change the legislative election. Which will give her straight up 33% of the seat. + the proportion of voters who voted for her in the election. (it's in her program)
    Which will give her a majority in the government, giving her executive and legislative complete power. With only the senate as a counter-chamber. Which is already aligned with some ideas that she has.

    That left-winger, Melenchon (spelling?), should ask for concessions (in writing!) from Macron ("I will tell my people to vote for you, if you do these 10 things" – He might not get 10, but you always start high in negotiations (just like your counterpart will always start low!), so that both sides can give a little and in the end you might get 5-8!). It's not like Macron's victory is assured and he needs the support and he can pay for it by being a better president for the average citizen!

    I hate smug-faced Macron and his pro-establishment and corporations politics, but I would rather have 10 of him than 1 of Le Pen, because frankly she would probably be worse for the average Joe (oh she does claim otherwise, but frankly right-wingers aren't the people-parties, they just want their ideology to win and will get in bet with corporations and rich people if that helps them!), too and also worse when it comes to foreign policy etc. 🙁
    ps: I am German, so quite close to the Frenchies!

    I'm sorry if I misunderstood the video but it seemed to say Melenchan voters were more likely to vote for Macron. Given that Le Pen performed better than Macron with the young and poor, why would Melenchan voters who are largely in that demographic be more likely to vote for Macron?

    You should perhaps get a better source of information. If you say Mélenchon said Macron is a deep state agent anyone with a bit of knowledge of the matter should see that the whole idea of a deep state have never been mentioned by him since the political idea of a deepstate as it is employed in the US does not exist in France. Or this statement is just there to make look Mélenchon like some kind of Trump to a unknowing auditor.

    the commentary from the regular TLDR News was great as usual. I really enjoyed the input from the city correspondent, however. It was brief and concise, keeping the tone of the overall TLDR platform consistent, but gave a very good on the ground and local perspective which was a nice credible way to backup the evaluation the TLDR commentator was giving surrounding the numbers of the election like stats and charts. If you see this, please try to add in more contributions like the one in this video, it was very helpful to the viewer.

    Another reason macron will gain votes, is because people KNOW how the left would react if Le Pen got in, they showed how civilized they are and how much they love democracy in Lyons and Rennes : storming the townhall, forcing the staff to barricade in the upper level, using makeshift mortars to bombard police… AND firefighters. Especially the old don't want complete anarchy.
