Should the West Give Putin Security Guarantees?

Published

on

In order to de-escalate the war in Ukraine, some have suggested the west actually ought to help Russia out, and provide Putin with security guarantees. So in this video we outline what this could look like and if this could actually be the best choice

in short answer . NO putin trusts people like he trusts himself.
he doesn't. in his eyes it is only natural to break any and all treaties the second they can have a micro inch of benefit of it.
guarantees in his eyes are just a sign of him winning and opens up future opportunities for him to betray any form of trust.
and as things go right now making treaties with russia is excusively making treaties with putin personally. rest of the country clearly does not matter.

Putin isn't invading Ukraine because he feels threatened, it's because he wants to expand his empire and feel like an accomplished Tsar

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

It all comes down to what you think Putins goals are. And I think he made it perfectly clear that he is a fanatic with imperialist ideas. He is willing to sacrifice his own country for that. There were offerings in the early stages of the war for peace he rejected. There is no reason to believe he'd actually only be out for security guarantuees. He wants to reinstate the Russian Empire in some former might but he can not do that unless he wins in Ukraine. I think for both Ukraine and Russia the goals are so hard that there is no room for peace as long as Putin is in power. Putins Russia has the goal of taking it's as rightful perceived territory back, Ukraine wants to defend their territorial integrity and does not want to be absorbed. There is no room for peace. As there is no reason to believe the narrative that Putin was only scared of the west.

I think you ask the wrong question. You should rather ask "Should Russia give West Security Guarantees", but Russia is untrustworthy, so any guaranties from them are useless. The best guarantee is defensive lane made of military forces.

The problem with comparing Japan with Russia is the fact we already owned Japan and havenโ€™t had them join NATO and Macron is serious about appeasement and demilitarization while we (NATO) donโ€™t control Western Russia. Yet. This isnโ€™t over and the SCO canโ€™t change that. God and history are on our side.

  16. @joeycmore

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

FU^K Macron and any other idiot playing the politics of appeasement. The world rolled for Hitler in '39 and look how that turned out. Lesson learned? Of course not; rollin' for Putin in Georgia, Chechnya and Crimea. The oil was more valuable than lives. Here we are again and Putin is sending tactical missiles into apartment blocks and a permanent member of the UN Security Council wants to provide security guarantees? FU^K that!

  17. @davidblair9877

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

The only way such a โ€œsecurity guaranteeโ€ could work is if it were made conditional on good Russian behavior. If Russia starts stealth annexing its neighborsโ€™ territory (see: Georgia) or tries more BS referenda (see: Donetsk, Luhansk), whelp, guess what, no more guarantees for you buddy boi. Behave and weโ€™ll leave you alone.
This really circles back to the idea of national sovereignty, which was the presiding attitude towards Russia anyway until Putin had the galaxy-brain idea to revive the Tsarist Empire.

What about security guarantees for Ukraine (and other neighbors of Russia) ? And what about Russian expansionism, that is the real cause of NATO enlargement ? Russia only recently annexed Crimea and various oblasts of Ukraine.

  25. @desmondcheung552

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

A key argument for against was missed, it is simply: Necessity. Russia has no real need for security guarantees. Russia has more nuclear weapons than the whole of NATO, including battlefield nukes and hypersonic missiles. No NATO member in their right mind, even with the USโ€™s backing, will ever invade Russia. Yes, I agree NATO has been an aggressor in Yugoslavia for instance, but it will never be able to adopt an actively aggressive stance against Russia. NATO has always been just a way for the vastly smaller countries like the Baltic states to be on more equal footing to Russia, not the other way round.

  26. @geraldmerkowitz4360

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

Don't take Macron's word too seriously. Has he ever given you the impression that he knows what he's doing?

  27. @P1MPST1K

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

I think both sides should provide security guarantees.

  28. @Trepallexux

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

I agree with Macron. No country can feel secure with weapons pointed at its backyard, no matter how much nukes it has. Also, if this would stop the war then I think it's worth having.

The Alternative is years of war and people dying. + The conflict can grow and encompass other countries on both sides.

Can we beat russia? Yes, but do we need to and at what cost?

  29. @JoseAlba87

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

    Nope!
    1. future prices of the next 20 to 30 years oil must stay under $50 a barrel.
    2. Russia states must have the right to be separate from Russia federation.
    3. All communists government must disintegrate.

The only Guarantee that Putin should get is that if he retires to Argentina quietly, he won't be killed

Putin's invasion of Ukraine raised NATO from the brink of death
Many, including the former president of the U.S., were questioning its relevance post Soviet Union
Now, no one questions the need for NATO

  32. @jerelull9629

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

The only "concession" Putin can accept is that Ukraine surrender to him unconditionally

  33. @jerelull9629

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

The only security guarantee is to say that NATO won't attack Russia outside of Article 5, which he already has, in effect.

  34. @LLlap

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

Yes, the guarantee should be that russia is wiped off the map. That would guarantee peace and security.

  35. @yuvalne

    February 29, 2024 at 4:45 pm

Russia violated peace treaties with Ukraine, twice. Both with much larger concessions.
The only fair security guarantee is a Japanese style deal – the US will station troops in Russia, there to defend it from any invasion to its territory as it was on the 31st of July, 2008.
But I've got a feeling Putin won't agree to that.

  36. @grfu08
