Given Russia’s history of cyber-attacks, many thought this would form an integral part of their invasion of Ukraine. But thus far, they haven’t been particularly effective. So why is this? And what does this all mean about the future of modern warfare?

The main reason for a Russian cyber failure is a absence of a cyber army in Russia. Their oligarchs are too greedy, and we listen our stupid propaganda.

If you really, honestly think the messiness of modern warfare will deter future countries from resorting to it, you haven't been paying attention. The sheer brutality and messiness of modern warfare has been known since before WWI, and yet there never has been a "war to end all wars." The belief there has been such a war, in fact, has led to some of the worst atrocities and bloodiest conflicts in human history. Humanity isn't going to stop shooting bullets at each other anytime soon. Ignore the possibility of physical warfare at your own peril.

Don't forget that a lot of Ukraine's infrastructure is still Soviet-era, working on analogue or electro-mechanical principals. You cannot hack a lump of solid iron in a 50 year old relay switch. Some of this is intentional, as the wisdom of avoiding connecting critical infrastructure to the unsecure public network was taken onboard by Ukrainian planners – it not only makes it less vulnerable, but often cheaper too, at the cost of making it more difficult to centrally control and get data from. Pointless tat adding vulnerabilities wasn't worth it, so it just wasn't there to begin with. Those systems that did go in, such as the mobile telephone network, were heavily vetted so that security vulnerabilities were usually caught and the vendor told to get lost if they were caught pushing insecure apparatus. That's how many businesses are going to have to deal with the issue (or just ignore it until the day security risks come back to bite them…)

Ukraine has been dealing with these attacks for decades, especially since 2013, thus many of the Russian's tricks have already been used time and time again. They've seen much of this before and thus been able to counter them – if you continuously try the same tactic against someone, they're eventually going to figure out a means of minimizing or even countering that action. Russia making prolific use of cyber attacks for trivial gains in peacetime gave people the chance to observe and learn beforehand, meaning that when things actually got serious, nothing original (other than scale) was actually thrown out there for the most part, and it was easily addressed. That's the danger of showing off capabilities rather than protecting them with discretion; people pay attention and develop countermeasures.

One thing that I really don’t understand is why Russia is so convinced that there is a western conspiracy to invade them. It’s not as if they have anything that we want or need. Who needs thousands of square miles of frozen tundra, ffs? Speaking personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing Moskow, St Petersburg and Lake Baikal, but it’s not as is I want to stay there or nick anything.

    February 29, 2024 at 1:29 am

I wouldn't call drones a part of cyber-warfare. They are physical objects and not computer data being used to disable computers and things they control. They are essentially a remote controlled weapon and such things have been in use for years.

As we've learned about just everything Russian, equipment and skills may be good, even excellent, but they're not the best to be found in the arenas in which they operate. Largely because, while Russia has been content to live on reputation, people have busied themselves hardening their defenses and coming up with countermeasures.

  43. @curtisjohnson9910
