Has the War in Ukraine Reached Stalemate?

Published

on

After Ukraine’s counter-offensives last month, the frontlines have been in relative stasis for weeks now. So how will Russia’s new defensive strategy impact the war going into Winter? And does this standstill mean that it could be time for peace talks?

The fact that Russua is the initiator, aggressor, a totalitarian and attacking civilians should be enough for most of the world to put boots on the ground in Ukraine. If the world just accepts that a country can invade, kill civilians, falsely annex portions of another, and still pretend everything is ok after a peace deal, then the world deserves to get hit by a massive meteor

When you said cold temperatures I was expecting -20c, not -5c
-5c is still a problem when exposure time is in the days and weeks. And getting colder overnight.
But central Canada reaches -30c to -40c in the winter

The world would be a better place if we stopped paying attention to egotistical, narcissistic, ignorant, greedy people like Elon Musk. He just wants attention, if we don't pay any mind to him, particularly on matters of geopolitical security (which he knows zero about) then he'll just self-combust out of lack of attention and we will all be better off for it.

  22. @barneymattox

Have to acknowledge what many others here have highlighted. I was very disappointed with the quality of this episode. The idea that nothing is happening because battle lines haven’t moved significantly belies all of the evidence coming from the front line which has Russians literally throwing themselves against the front lines burning up armor, aircraft, ammunition, and tremendous loss of life, and as mostly recently documented killing their few remaining skilled fighters. When Russia does hold back, then the Ukrainian forces are softening up their defenses or taking out strategic targets. There’s a tremendous amount of progress being made and Ukraine is being safe, cautious, and particularly clever in every move they make. As to negotiations, Ukraine has already negotiated with Russia multiple times. Russia is supposed to be defending Ukraine against threats, under one such agreement right now. And negotiations performed during the war, like the surrender at Azovstal or earlier cease fires were all met with torture, a bombing of one of the prisons, and shelling of civilian buses trying to evacuate people. Putin has lied at every step of the way and any peace agreement wouldn’t be worth the paper it’s written on. Maybe if U.S. and Europe agree to protect Ukraine in the future, effectively bringing them into NATO, then there might be a basis for negotiations, but there’s no path to that right now. And quoting Musk who has no political or military experience as a meaningful opinion while ignoring vast expert feedback and evidence to the contrary is really unforgivable for any journalistic organization. The only thing holding Ukraine down right now is the U.S. and their resistance to providing comparative weapons like the ATACMS. This is not an over-simplification. Russia can, and has been, bombing Ukraine and it’s civilian citizens and infrastructure into the stone age or worse because Ukraine has no comparable weapon with which to target Russia’s long range launch systems or inventories. So acceptance into NATO or similar defensive terms or actually supplying Ukraine with comparable weaponry to what they’re being pounded on should be the story here. Or at least, respect what is happening right now on the front lines and the incredible Ukrainian tactics and the inhumanity of Russia’s military and mobilization “strategy”. Extremely disappointed.

The Russians aren't moving troops around, and is more focused on defending. While winter is coming?

Interesting. If I was a general in Ukraine, I would start focusing my attacks on the least defended territory. Either that, or the most defended territory.

Play your cards right you can remove large chunks at a time, or smaller chunks at a time adding up to become a bigger chunk over time.

In the end, if your enemy isn't moving, and is holding still? It's the perfect time to strike, and strip. Of course this is my opinion.
