Coming back to this the talking points came back to me. Good video.ISDS and food deregulations were the reasons I went to protest. There are a lot of regulations here. The fear was that even if a company didn't really want to expand here, they could pretend to, to sue for a quick pay out if they were denied because of regulations. My country the Netherlands has protected zones to keep nature alive and few forests. Imagine a Canadian logging company coming here for logging where there are barely any forests and the majority of that is protected. It just doesn't make any sense.
Or they would build houses and expand cities in areas where it's very difficult to expand now. There is a huge urban area called the Randstad around the Green Heart a protected area.
The examples people were yelling about were a bit much but the problems coming were probably very real. There was an in depth documentary what companies could do and had done through ISDS already in Canada with gas drilling. Here in the Netherlands we already had gas drilling scandal on our own without the help of ISDS. Then with this they would have to pay the company if they were denied or keep drilling despite the damage caused to housing and the population there.
Essentially the government would be used as a cash cow instead of anything productive. Money that could be used elsewhere instead of lining the pockets of lawyers and companies. So it's very debatable if the GDP would actually increase. It's like placing a kick me to get money sign on your back. And even if it did increase, that doesn't mean the standard of living there gets better. It can even decrease.
That documentary also showed a country in Africa under ISDS where the company just kept workers there in terrible conditions, exploited land and violated safety precautions. The people angry and protesting the companies in the neighborhood just didn't have a say. They didn't improve anything.

March 1, 2024 at 9:18 am
And why would nhs and isds present a problem to the free trade agreement between two major economies?
Okay, you have a form of arbitrage which is a judicial process that can be accepted by each member state by their criteria and formulation of its model.
You have EU origin for consumer goods that are produced in the EU, which is normal and a form of credibility/trustworthiness based certificate directed towards the end consumers on the us market.
None of these factors seem unsolvable nor the factors that should prevent negotiations or FTA between two similar model economic systems.
The major factors in this case were mentioned at the beginning of this video.
Reduce regulations and specific trade barriers as well as tarrifs reduction and security enhancement of foreign direct/indirect operators/investors.

The largest trading union is between Canada, Mexico and US. Even with 2 trading organizations in place Europe sinks to domestic politics. That's why there are so many Etno-states in Europe. The EU experiment is destined to fail because of local politics over equal standards? Trade protectionism is a limiting thing in the long run.
@0ShadowG0

the US and the EU opperate in 2 opposing ways – business first vs individual first. A comprehensive agreement from a getgo would be imo impossible. But, I think we do need to try and work on closer cooperation and removing barriers where possible. A lot of friction is unnecessary and we'd all benefit by removing them.

You won't find many people in the USA that want American solders on European soil when the USA is in massive financial debt. The strange thing is that when the USA tried to pull out during Trump it was Germany that prevented it not the USA. This has to come to an end, Germany and EU are much closer to Russia than USA yet keep forcing the USA to have forces there only risking conflict with Russia for no reason when the USA isn't welcome or wanted in Europe so this has got to come to and end. The reality is that Europe will only get closer to Russia and large scale trade will counter any threat of violence not US military presence which is probably doing the opposite. It is time for the EU to work with Germany and release the USA from this situation and finally end USA involvement in Europe which should have ended in 1991 anyway.

"This translates to an extra €545 is disposable each year for a family of 4"….Pointless figure put in reports to make the plebs excited by overly-simplistically dividing expected growth figure by population numbers. That's not how it works though…The "job creators" (i.e. rich business owners) will benefit directly from from the increased GDP and their immediate instinct won't be to use it all to increase wages, and even if they did that would have an effect on inflation of everyday prices. The idea that if TTIP had have been signed your wages would have gone up by 500 euros a year is for the birds but is the implication of the report who obviously want to sell it to the masses.
