If you play football with skinny little legs you're going to get injured. Work harder on your quads to protect the knee.

I love women's football, but let's be real – no "addressing the issue" is going to better female bone structure (wider hips) and muscle strength. Unfortunately for a women's footy fan like myself, nature didn't equip ladies with adequate engine for running and changing directions non stop for 90+ minutes. ACLs happened, happen and will happen in this sport much more often, we must live with it.

I would imagine the lack of an extended break post pandemic for the top players due to club and international tournaments won't have helped

Great podcast. Love all the insight from these current and former players. Definitely more research needs to be dedicated to these injuries in the women's games. All women's teams at each club need to invest more in their medical side to help prevent these injuries….

Pretty easy when you think about it, by the way I suffered an ACL as a youngster myself. It's down to their body shape. A woman's lower leg is much thinner than her thighs & backside. A woman carries a lot more weight & strength from the thigh & backside than any other part of their body. They tend to have wider hips than shoulders for instance.
Now take into account their leg below the knee. The difference in the leg below the knee to above their knee, is far greater than a man's. Meaning their knee joint has a whole lot more stress & strain on it. Football is all twisting turning sudden bursts & sudden stops. The strain on a female knee joint must be massive. It might not be politically correct to point out the obvious. But it is what it is.

Kit and equipment manufacturers need to design specifically for female and disabled athletes. All clubs should be like Bristol City, Southampton, Leicester City, Sheffield United, MK Dons, Reading, Birmingham, Barnet / London Bees, Birmingham City, Kilmarnock, SC Freiburg, Parma, Le Havre and every single club in the MLS / NWSL main stadium is officially the permanent home of both men and women’s first teams. All clubs should invest in and promote their teams like Barcelona, Arsenal, Wrexham, Brighton, Chelsea, Roma, Wolfsburg, Lyon, PSG, Juventus, Benfica, Corinthians etc… All clubs should pay men and women the same like Lewes and national teams do.

Woman are not built for combat so ACl injury is gonna happen when they ahve less bone density which puts stress on her muscles when twisting and kicking hard. Again woman are not built for combat and prowess.

some people need to be taught how to run properly and effectively. If youve ever had a good 100m, 200m coach also hurdles youll know there are ways to run which maximize performance minimise risk but i see both men and women run in weird ways. Personally I only played rugby properly but the principles apply the same in football and in some cases more as it is full contact. People will turn and move in very haphazard ways that puts pressure in places it is not needed or counter intuitive

Its simple really, intensity is getting better every year in the women's game, less testosterone than men so easier for bone breakages and at this moment in time there probably not doing enough strength work in the gym
