Its horrific, we're seeing a huge increase in homeless pensioners who rented all their lives as rents where affordable in years gone by but are now unaffordable and theyre being evicted from their homes. In 2010 it was very easy and doable to rent on a small wage or while in college, now fully grown adults with good jobs and ten years of working experience are living in their childhood bedrooms, well beyond being considered a 'young age', their are adults in their mid 30's, 40's and beyond living with their parents. Ireland has the highest number of single adults in the history of the state as the housing crisis is directly effecting peoples ability to have intimate and romantic relationships & as a result the birth rate is dropping amongst Irish people. In addition to this the government has taken in 100's of thousands of refugees and asylum seekers who they cant house. They have bought off hotel owners to provide accommodation to asylum seekers at 50 euro a head a night, filling 80 room hotels with 500 people in some cases. This is desecrating the tourism industry, they almost gave student housing to asylum seekers which would had left thousands of young people unable to attend college, mass protests involving Irish universities prevented this from happening. Anyone who questions the governments policies around asylum seekers is labeled as far right and racist by the government. They have now started to run out of hotel spaces so hundreds of asylum seekers are left homeless across the country. This is in addition to our 15k homeless numbers (not including hidden homeless). Social housing has up to 25 years of a waiting list, some people are moved up or down the list depending on their circumstances but generally, the average wait time is 10 years.

A big issue is lack of infrastructure. There are no trains or trams in Ireland outside Dublin. None of those fancy underground trains either. All the jobs are in Dublin because its the only place with the infrastructure. Because its where the government is. So thats where all the houses are. But one small city can't hold 6m people.

"Either the targets are too low or don't get met" The targets are too low by design and even those low targets are missed, revised to a lower number then missed again.
Leo Varadkar is on record saying he wants to be careful of building enough houses because it would reduce property values and property owners would lose money. The "housing crisis" is FG policy working exactly as intended. Making more money by doing less, it's genius. Morally bankrupt but genius.

The number of houses being built either social, private development or self builds are all heavily supressed by government which in turn raises property values and rent prices. They are directly influencing the market and then try to point at the "marketprice" as something holy that cant be interfered with by mere mortals for any reason.

My father was Irish, I was born in America. When Trump was elected I decided to leave the US as I thought the man was going to end the US and I still think that he is a Nazi who is not done trying to end the nation. I tried Australia but could not afford it on my pension so I went to Ireland where I am a citizen. But the rent was too high, and I got sick, nothing really serious but I found the healthcare system was a chaotic disaster. The final straw was the old bitch in the apartment below mine with about a dozen of her friends at 3 in the morning drunk and rioting in the courtyard of the apartment block (a man was stabbed and guards came) yelling up at my apartment that I did not belong there. Right, my family which has been buried in the same cemetery for 500 years and older but the rain has washed away the dates and names, but I don't belong. That attitude is what struck me as one of the least kind and most unfriendly, you are welcome there as long as you spend a few thousand dollars then leave. I have to say that Ireland has always had as its greatest export its own children, and the moment you step off that island you are no longer Irish to those who remain.

Majority of politicians are landlords who dont want to see rent prices decrease.

  19. @agritech802

    March 2, 2024 at 12:43 am

As an Irish person, I can say this video has misrepresented the cause of the housing situation in Ireland, just to give you one example, it says the cause of the housing crisis is bad government policy and that Sinn Fein purposes to fix the problem. However, Sinn Fein is one of the main parties who block every proposed housing development in the country. They are like Trump in the U.S. he's blocking the border Bill so that he can say there's a problem with the border and Sinn Fein are blocking housing initiatives so that they can say there's a problem with housing. The only difference is that Trump is leaning towards three far right and Sinn Fein are leaning towards the far left.

  20. @benjaminfisher8120

    March 2, 2024 at 12:43 am

Sad to see people still thinking rent control is the solution. Rent control will only decrease supply and lead to further shortages.

  21. @seanconroy7222

    March 2, 2024 at 12:43 am

The real reason is that we are being invaded by the third world. They are being housed before the Irish people.

The multinational companies bringing in rich employees from abroad to work in Dublin and pushing up tental prices in the city center that spread outwards. Did not help either.
