I am going to raise a glass to Dina Asher-Smith. On 11th August 2018, she became the first Briton and only the sixth woman in history to break 11 seconds for the 100 metres and 22 seconds for the 200 metres before her twenty-third birthday, by running the 200 metres in 21.89 seconds. Her precise age on that date was 22 years 250 days.
The first five women to achieve this accomplishment were, in date order, Evelyn Ashford (USA), Heike Drechsler (East Germany, later Germany), Katrin Krabbe (East Germany, later Germany), Marion Jones (USA) and Allyson Felix (USA), so Asher-Smith was the first non-USA and non-East German woman to achieve this.
Asher-Smith was the first woman to achieve this in ten years. If you are reading this Dina, I wish you every success for the World Athletics Championships in Oregon and the Commonwealth Games from Birmingham. You are a brilliant role model for girls and young women everywhere, no matter their skin tone, nationality or religious beliefs.
