Stupid question but i was never clear when visiting. Is having roommates as common as it is in the US? I've often had roommates because it lets me pay about 20% of my take home pay on rent vs 40% to rent my whole 2 bedroom apartment.

I live at home till I was 25 saving money in the USA and still can't afford a family. I saved at least 50% of every paycheck and never worked less then 40 hours. Other then the first two years of temp jobs after highschool. Ps also donating blood plasma… Biggest issue: rent/housing costs.

(Maybe at 30 I will be a dad.)

By the way living is a great option for many people and should be used, i probably would have anyways… But this isn't an option, it's force on us by economic conditions.

Greed by property owners. BTL etc.
Social media addiction by Gen Z.
lack of opportunities for hard skilled workers.
Too many people, too few homes.

Dont forget, its just a room you need without children though.

I loved living in Europe, and I still love to move back there at some point in my future. However, after coming back to my home country where is one of the top economically grown and stable countries in the world, I could see how the life is more qualified here and the life back then in Europe was always more struggling at work, in economics, and in a culture base (especially for foreigners like me). It seemed like I got “abandoned” by the EU after making my dream to live in Europe come true and felt chained by the memories of life there, but now I could see that it was a fate to come back home for a good reason and people respect me with a lot of life and job experiences in EU coutures! I should embrace the current life here, as my European friends working and living in my country also mention the same.
People in Europe, if you see other side of the world, there are more jobs and independency in the other forms. Sometimes “foreign countries” would more appreciate your ability and existence than our home countries! If you’re up for new adventure, you could see the other opportunities out of your comfy zone which is your home country/town 😊❤

I'm a Dutch student living in a temporary student house. My studies are only given in one university in the whole country, and it would be too far away to keep living with my parents and travel to my university every day. I am very glad that I found a room. It is only a temporary solution, though. I can get kicked out at any time because there are plans to demolish the whole building to build a new neighbourhoud.
I am worried about the time that I have to move out because that means that I have to look for another place at the same time as 80 other students living in the building.
Because my parents live far away from the university, I won't be able to continue with my studies if I can't find a place to live.

Croatian here -> if you were to save all the money from an average salary, it would take you about 15 years to afford a home. Given the current cost of living crisis, you are lucky if you save 20% of your salary. So yeah, without a credit it would take essentially your whole life with an average salary to purchase a home if you didnt save a shit ton every month

I work two jobs and have less purchase power than my parents generation even with my own apartment. The bills have gone up 5x in cost since 2016, groceries cost 3 times as much, and there is no end in sight. Corporate greed and government incompetence will be our demise.

  22. @ivisiri

    March 2, 2024 at 3:02 pm

It's not good to present it as "forty-nine point bla" vs "one in three". The difference sounds huge to the careless listener, while it's 50 vs 33 or "one in two vs one in three". Is it still a big difference? yeah! as big as 49 vs 1? no! Personal opinion but that's just not how I would present data unless I intentionally want to distort the perception.

Because living on your own is EXPENSIVE and because employers pay like crap! I am sorry, but with around 1900 Euros (after taxes!) you are not living a decent life after subtracting all the monthly bills (food, water, power, rent, insurance, maintenance for your car, gas, some clothes and shoes)…there's not much left! You should also invest some money for retirement (pension systems might collapse till the millenials and younger are retiring!)…so yeah, of course many live at home! Hell, I only moved out because my grandmother died and my aunt moved into her (former) apartment, so I could move into her former apartment (in the house my grandfather built, so it's family property!)! So I am not paying rent, that means I can afford a few things, but frankly that's still not living and frankly I hate employers who are all stingy as fuck! Haven't you dickheads learned from Mr. Robert Bosch (the guy who founded the Electronics-Company of the same, which makes tools, washing-machines etc.): I don't pay good wages, because I am rich, I am rich because I pay good wages! (German: "I zahle nicht gute Löhne weil ich reich bin, ich bin reich, weil ich gute Löhne zahle!")….sometimes I really get why people want socialism at least that system has comparatively few super-rich!

As an Asian. I find it weird to see westerner leave home after a certain age. We are taught to live with our parents until they pass away, serve them and continue to live there forever unless some family dispute happens. For most Asian real meaning of family is grandparents, parents and children's or even grand children's.

I either stay at home with my mother. Or I take soo much loans that I will have the bank as my landlord for the next two lifetimes. Or I waste most of my salary on rent to live in a cardboard box sized apartment.

The choice is kind of clear.

Poland's culture is similar to a lot of Asian places , you move out at – at least 25 . This is partially economical but largely because there's no reason for you to leave at 18 or 22 considering you'll be unable to save money and the extra work will make it difficult to find a place to work

This is me lol, but for me a part of it is missing out on that familial thing in my teens. My teens were me moping around playing video games but as I got older and experienced more things it filled me with regret, especially after Covid 😢 Like you miss out of trips and things of that nature. It is good to spend time with your parents and save up for when you can buy your own home, and I help out with the bills so not freeloading. I think they will move to my mother’s country to retire and give the house to me, I can sell, and move on. Never be ashamed of living with and having a good relationship with parents many would cherish it! ❤️ 👨‍👩‍👦

This analysis makes no analysis on the carreers of the young people that actually left their parents homes during their 20s, it just says "the value of a degree has decreased", well, not for programmers, lawyers, and specially people that has a usefull degree. Maybe we could actually normalize artist, actors, poets, sociologists, etc are not productive degrees and stop grouping them with the ones that are?
