   A pluralistic democracy is far preferable to the toxic two party system that prevails in the USA, UK and Australia…it diminishes politics to the equivalent a football hooligan farce, where tribalism trivialises the importance of serious press coverage and an informed electorate.

   In case you're watching this in the future:
   The greens and FDP discussed with whom they wanted to coalise before talking to the "big" players SPD and CDU. They settled on the SPD.

   The election period truly was something else. Three candidates, each widely considered to be at the very least suboptimal, enter the arena. Baerbock and Laschet are considered to have good chances for victory, the greens even overtook the CDU at one point, no one takes Scholz seriously. It was joked a lot about the fact that the SPD even proposed a candidate for chancellor when polls put them at 12% at the time. Then Laschet screws up time after time, Baerbock gets bashed into the ground for (imo) basically nothing and suddenly, a month or two before election day, people seem to have forgotten all the scandals Scholz was a part of and his poll scores skyrocket without him doing absolutely anything. Sadly, during this whole campaign policy never really was in the spotlight like it usually is. Election day comes and those wild results came in.
   The first really exciting election I lived through, because so many options were on the table, and the very real possibility that with Merkel resigning, many procrastinated topics would get attention again.

    The SPD under Schröder made the most disguisting laws in german history to make rich people richer and increase suffering of poor and disabled people. They implemented what basically is slavery of people who lost their job forcing them to work for 1euro an hour.. but thats the whole government in the last 30 years. Germany is one corrupt garbage place where even gambling and racism is on the rise again.

    the problem is what to chose. i mean cdu is korrupt and as modern as the middle ages and all the others are just slightly better.

    sadly there is no option to chose none, that would clearly represent that the whole government is representing shit …

    This result is the perfect example why we also should have a maximum election age, old people only vote for CDU or SPD. Are we in Armerica ? The CDU lost 1mil People to death i think thats sums it up pretty well

    i would like to say cdu lost alot because of massiv corruption, underfunding important key elements of society and waste of taxmoney, but i am afraid its correct that they just did not like laschet that much. =)

    This is the first video I ever watched where an Englishman talks about German politics. Nice that there's some interest in that, even though I can only imagine most of the world getting level 5 seizures trying to understand our system of government.

    That's your american perspective. The parliament is the more important, the chancellor really just represents the government which works through the parliament. As I see it, most Germans vote for parties not for (unremarkable) individuals.

    Söder never actually challenged Laschet for the CDU leadership. Media brought Söder up and non-electial votings showed that Söder would be preferred by more than 60% of the population the other 40% was split between Laschet, März and another guy whose name I forgot. In the end there was the discussion if Söder might actually go for challenging Laschet, but he decided on his own to stay leading CSU in Bavaria. He sort of challenged Laschet, but not officially.

    First chart is wrong, the FDP has only increased by 12 seats in the Bundestag. That's about 1.5%.
