Earlier this week, a trade war broke about between the US and Canada. But the EU, a more Canada-aligned ally, appears to have a pretty muted response so far. So, in this video, we’re taking a look at the escalating US-Canada trade war, how it’s pushing Canada towards the EU and how the EU is responding.

the problem with shutting down the vast majority of Retail stores is that it forces people to shop online, even if they normally would buy it locally. Amazon has been the only reliable retailer to deliver items within a few weeks, as opposed to months by other companies (if the items show up at all). I think the big problem is in deciding whether or not an item is essential. A working from home parent may see arts and crafts items as essential for their children, but Amazon or the government may not

Amazon was just trying to intimidate the French. “You don’t want me to abuse worker’s rights, then I close down”. Of course the French government is not impressed by this. It’s the French government!!!
They will think: “good we get temporarily rid of this American company, we didn’t like in the first place”. Love the French. Greeting from the Netherlands.

2:54 "France wants tech giants to pay their fair share" so France is home to the most famous tax haven Monaco, doesn't seem like this desire for companies to pay their fair share is very realistic. There are plenty of other tax havens in Europe but this is nothing like leading by example.

Amazon were taking the opportunity to sell everything on their site, and deliberately not respecting the essential goods requirement in the slightest. They were seeking to gain a commercial advantage over other French retailers from the crisis, the government were right to step in. amazon then compounded their behavior by writing directly, via e.mail to all their French customers saying the gvt had shut them down and effectively asking their customers to pressure the government so that they (Amazon) could gain an advantage, grow market share and ultimately profits which they would then dodge paying tax on. I am repulsed by their conduct and have deleted my details from Amazon and have no intention of ever ordering anything from them again. I urge everyone else to do the same, we are customers who deserve a service frm them, not sheep to be fleeced by them.

Amazon let a sick worker keep working in their warehouse in the US. another worker noticed this and complained and let all the other workers know about it. he was fired. they blamed him for not doing proper social distancing and/or was sick and it was leaked that the higher ups in Amazon tried to smear him.

Governments are basically police states right now. There should be no lockdowns whatsoever in the world. The damage being done to millions of people’s lives and businesses and many people will not recover, all because a tiny % of people will die if they get the disease. Economies have been ruined and governments have had to step in spending billions and billions to help.
Why not just lock down those at risk, spend money and resources just on them, have areas in parks where they can go, areas that are regularly sanitised, certain times for them to go shopping. They still get looked after and the rest of the people can carry on driving the economy and taking wages home to feed their family.
END LOCK DOWN NOW

Should have just went ahead and fined Amazon, that Jeff Bezos is too rich anyway, losing a million euros to the French government in fines a day is just a drop in the bucket. This would help relieve the financial strain on France's government and make Bezos a little less rich, which is a win win in my perspective.

As someone whose phone charger just broke, and would have been completely cut off from my family if I'd not been able to buy another one and get it delivered next-day, I'm unusually forgiving of Amazon at the moment. As awful as their are to their workers, they provide unparalleled service to their customers. We're all struggling right now, in one way or another. On a personal level I have, sadly, been thinking more of myself and less of others over the past six weeks or so.
Am I a bad person for ordering a charger from Amazon?

Seems like a spectacular own goal by the trade unions. France is good at this!
They managed to shut down 10,000 jobs with the help of their justice system, which was designed by a Corsican upstart with no legal training. A system that presumes guilt before innocence. A system that attempts to impose punitive penalties on any entity that dates to succeed at outsmarting the French way of doing things.

What? It's unacceptable that you don't get paid if you don't come to work? 😀 Are you kidding me?

given the paucity of things to do in lockdown, I guess a condom can be considered essential

This is only going to hurt the French people, Amazon have enough money to shut this off but the people who rely on amazon to pay thier wages will be the ones who suffer.

Everybody’s idea of essential items are different, but I am sure that there is guidance in France. The main point is that Amazon is an arrogant company that has not addressed the social distancing requirements in its premises. Do this and there are no problems. Is it difficult? Not really! The should know their own sites and be able to arrange the to protect their staff. Other companies are doing so all over the world, so can Amazon.

a good sign that amazon is not almighty. If politics want to they could force amazon (and co) to embed european standards. therefore opening the market for european businesses which have to stick to standards and therefore can't compete with amazon.

Little point in Amazon bashing. They exist and they are rich and powerful. Boohoo. Workers should be entitled to work within safegaurds, Amazon should not be given the possibility of a million euro fine if they breach an ambiguous statement. That is rediculous to anyone with half a brain. If you intend to impose a fine you must specify on what grounds. We have all seen how the police in this country have met with problems about the term "essential". The government themselves have not been completely clear. Why can I buy a bottle of gin, but not a pair of shoes? I have no great love of Amazon and historic working practices. But I don't blame them in making a stand and saying OK you tell me whats essential and I will sell it. Is it above the capabilities of any government to specify what that term means?
