EU debates citizenship, identity amid economic gloom
http://www.euronews.com/ If you are worried about finding a job or your family is struggling to pay the bills, the European Year of Citizens might have passed you by.
The European Commission says this new intitiative will remind EU citizens of their rights. It runs until the end of 2013.
Ireland’s Europe Minister Lucinda Creighton said: “it’s about engaging citizens on all sorts of topics, from questions regarding free movement and different rights to their expactations from the European Union.”
For the left-wing NGO network ‘Solidar’, there is a real lack of knowledge amongst Europeans about what the EU does.
“We have the Charter of Fundamental Rights that only a few people know. There are many rights in the area of anti-discrimination that go unnoticed,” said Solidar’s Conny Reuter.
“The first problem we need to face is that many citizens are not aware of the rights they have and how they can claim them.”
But with unemployment in the EU above ten percent, some Europeans might say there are more pressing matters than a debate on EU citizenship and identity.

The EU is an dangerously unaccountable, totalitarian 1-party oligarchy, like the USSR was! No country should be complicite in this regime, to the dire detriment of future generations. The cost of membership for the UK is far more than the ยฃ20bo p.a. often stated. There's all the foreign quangos imposed on us by the EU costing over ยฃ150bo p.a. and there's the cost of the ever-growing EU immigration overloading our benefits system & NHS. Signing the Lisbon treaty was treason. We should leave NOW.

Year of the citizen? LOL! EU citizens will continue to be stripped of wealth and liberty, because that is the wayh non-democratic totalitarian states go. Since the Lisbon Treaty, the unelected EU rulers have the power to impose any new laws it wishes onto its member states, and you can be sure that the cost of membership will rise continuously until all citizens are begging, poweless, for it to stop. Britain should get out NOW before it's too late. Meanwhile, I'll support UKIP and no-one else.

It might do well for the EU delegates to walk out the door of buildings in Brussels and talk to those who are beggin right outside.

It pisses me off that I can't have any peace and quiet when I get home from work because there are 7 Poles living in a one bedroom flat above me. The EU has taken a huge dump on the British working-class.
