On Sunday Portugal headed to the polls in an election triggered by a power play from the Left Bloc & Communists. However, that move is now looking more questionable, with the electoral gamble certainly not paying off. So in this video we’ll unpack what happened, why the left took such a major chance and why it didn’t work out.

Is Portugal the only country in Europe (other than Denmark?) where the left-wing has won an election recently?

Dude chega isnt far right, its the farthest right weve had in portugal, but compared with other parties in other european and extra-european countries its not that far from centre.

The only reason they got the majority was because people were afraid of Chega raising to power, so they voted PS. This resulted in the current political crisis.

Portugal's politics are rotten corrupt – been like that for at least 30 years now.

One of the most incompetent public sectors I've ever seen in my whole life – while the private sector is ultra-greedy. So, there's no growth possible with this kind of leadership.

The only viable solution is Chega – at least it has solutions and members doing great job for small regions and peripheries around big cities.
Portuguese's mass-media tries at all cost to damage and label Chega as a far-right and racist party – which is far from the truth.
Chega want's to change how gypsies are using tax payers money to buy luxury cars while their youth drop school and goes into crime.
They call it Far-Right 'cos Chega doesn't want a Nanny Government for Portugal.
They say Chega isn't suitable 'cos they want to demand the BANKS to give back the money they stole during BES Scandal and others.
They can't call it anything else 'cos they're a bunch of corrupt that have to be careful with accusations since 13 PS ministers already resigned.

Portugal's not a full representative democracy 'cos there's a few Oligarch and influential old families that still use their power to corrupt.

So yeah. In short. PS and PSD have the political machine figured out. They go around kissing and dancing with old people, promising them everything. When the elections came, most young people and working class are busy and PS/PSD win from having a bunch of elderly population.

Now Chega has been growing, mainly 'cos PS/PSD/LEFT are CORRUPT and INCOMPETENT, but also 'cos young people are WAY more educated and are now growing up.
Simply talking without saying anything won't work any longer.

Whenever communists are involved, shit backfires in some way. Never trust the hard left and hard right.
Commies and nazis cannot be trusted.

With almost 50,000 British living in Portugal it's great to have a concise update on the political landscape in a format that I can understand.
My Portuguese is ok for shopping and light conversation. All politics and bureaucracy here is shrouded in legal language. Many (including natives) choose to pay solicitors or administrators to navigate the paperwork.
More details in the future please.

I can understand why the Communists have done what they did, they are just stupid Leninists, but the Left? Why?

  14. @farinfasfarinfinfinhas7903

    March 5, 2024 at 11:52 pm

I have to tell you something. "Chega" is not far-right I must say. It's called far-right by the toxic socialists and commies. There's no far right at the moment in Portugal.

  15. @luisaresta8235

    March 5, 2024 at 11:52 pm

Well the portuguese dictatorship was not fascist, it was a right wing authoritarian regime. And Chega is more of a conservative party, a little too close to far right but they are similar to Britain's conservative party.
The rest is spot on, just as a fun fact, it's documented that when Rome was trying to conquer what is now Portugal Julius Caesar proclaimed, Who are those people that don't govern themselves and don't allow others to govern them. Not much has changed

  16. @rof8200

    March 5, 2024 at 11:52 pm

Large government spending plans and more bureaucrats are continuing to make Portugal extremely business unfriendly

  17. @adrijobecq

    March 5, 2024 at 11:52 pm

Geringonça actually translates better to "contraption", it's a nameless machine that you don't really know how it works.

  18. @soggybread5853

    March 5, 2024 at 11:52 pm

Even with all the flaws of the Portuguese government I hear about (no government is perfect), as a Hungarian leftist I would be happy if my country’s politics was more like that of Portugal.

  19. @bfmtrooper5454

    March 5, 2024 at 11:52 pm

Well, the less left wing parties that are in power around the world, the better. I would rather see the far right in power than any left wing party.

In this video, we’re going to take a look at the ruling in France and explain why, while it might be good news for Le Pen personally, it is actually probably bad news for the National Rally and thus the French right.
