TLDR Global: https://youtube.com/tldrglobal

Last weekend the people of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate took to the polls in their regional elections. Merkel’s CDU had a difficult few months heading into the election, but some still hoped that they could perform well… hopes which were well and truly dashed. So in this video we examine what happened in the elections, why the tide’s turning against the CDU and what it means for the future of Germany.

Thanks to everyone for pointing out the colour issues in our charts. I think we just picked the CDU's colour from their logo but clearly, that was a mistake. We'll make sure to use black to represent the CDU going forward and be more vigilant when checking party colours in other countries too – Jack

When Merkel wanted to close nuclear power plants, most experts and scientists even the climate change activist was against it and warned about coal plant will make a come back when she does it. Also economists warned her that there will be 30% increase in electricity costs. But she was a political animal/ power grabber above the need of the country.

This is why I was and still against stronger EU, political animals like her sooner or later will hold ultimate power in EU and you would see your countries be used like chess pawn on their game of power.

They have a candidate named Armin Lash*t?!?!

I know that it is not spelled like that but you do know that it sounds like it. Who would want to vote on a candidate whose surname means the thing that comes out of your tuckus? Maybe he needs to think of a "celebrity name" or Screen name.

In my country, if a political candidate has a surname that will be the laughingstock of the general public , they use a screen name to hide it.

P.S. If he continues to use that name, his opposition would describe his style of governance as "Laschetty". See? I already thought of a nasty joke. AND I am not German.

there is much more going on though. cdu was good back in the days so many older people still vote cdu because they always have. younger people only see the recent things the cdu has done especially their take on the internet (artikel 13/17 bringing us the dreaded upload filters and calling voices protesting that bots and trolls) so on top of really messing up and loosing their old voter base (both due to generational shift and finally taking it to far) they are less than appealing to new and young voters.
the cdu was (i hope was is the right word here) in charge for as long as i can remember so they are to blame for most of political mistakes and bs. best example is that they prevented laws to help fight corruption for years now.

As a young german student at the berlin Uni, let me tell you…. I am tired of the CDU/CSU. Since the pandemic or rather since all those empty promises and slow actions we have a new word "Mütend" It is angry (wütend) and tired (müde) combined. We feel that everyday here, and I am truly just fed up with our ruling party. I am excited for the super election year and I am always inbetween crying and celebrating whenever there are new scandals popping up. Every Vote not for the CDU (or AFD which is a rightwing party) makes me and many young germans very happy.

  27. @MaravinYT

    March 6, 2024 at 3:07 pm

Could you use a single term for the heads of government of the German states? In this video, you called them State Premiers, State Governors, and Minister Presidents.

  28. @crunchynut2559

    March 6, 2024 at 3:07 pm

Well… it is not suprising that the CDU lost votes. Their management with the crisis is awfull. They are doing the same things since the start of the pandamic. They don't listen to scientific research and act irrationally if they act at all. Some people in power just didn't acted at all and said do what you want but please don't meat people. And not only their management with the pandamic is really bad their political goals in generell. They set themaelfes in the past soooo many goals that the didn't achived. I think if you count all the goals they set themselves you will find way more gials that they failled instead of accomplished. Another thing is that they act out of idiology and not of rationality. The drug polocy for example the voices in the country to legalize weed are getting louder and louder and recent survays show that more germans want weed to be legal instead of illegal. In arguments they where crushed by in terms of rationality and the awnser ti that from the leading drug polocy maker is "just because alcohol is dangerous doesn't mean that weed is brocolli". And the one before her said once "canabis is illegal because it is banned." I mean what is that? In my opinion it is good that they are loosing votes. Irrational thinking, disconnecion to the population and corruption lead to this. Well it all is their own doing.

all political relevant parties in the parliament are so unpleasant and bad idk how a new coalition could make something good

Didn't you realize, the secrete working of Communist Merkel within the CDU? The result is what you see: people don't want the "one-party-state"! They are fed up with it (specially in the East!). They don't want it any more!

  34. @oreocookie9775

    March 6, 2024 at 3:07 pm

Not gonna lie. I'm really happy about the decline of the CDU. Consider this:
    > Digitalisation has been absolutely neglected every since the CDU has gotten into power, leaving one of the highest performing economies worldwide at a state where internet is only somewhat useable, rarely good and also where most of the time the digitalisation in schools is just having an overhead projector.
    > They seem to really love money and also they tend to ignore most other people's opinon within the Bundestag, veto'ing lobby registers in order to keep things transparent and trustworthy for multiple years (until recently in an sad attempt to make themselves look better)
    > Barely anything is done for students, work trainees and overall younger adults; the CDU mainly focuses on the old people and yeah I get it.. We're having an aging population, but by not giving younger people time to breathe and scrape money together while either not having had good enough chances if you're coming from a poor family, then no one is being helped in the long run.
    > People in essential jobs (especially now) have been complaining about the awful situation their jobs have been (for decades even) and yet still CDU/CSU barely did anything to improve the conditions workers at old folks homes have to endure. Instead of actually improving the conditions for workers here, they try to lure in people from abroad; I mean sure, but that doesn't fix the issue. It's just exploiting people from other (poorer) countries, and that is also a solution that is absolutely not going to last.

I will leave this country if they actually manage to win the majority. It's just not worth it seeing nothing change, being told the same unheld promises over and over while they're mainly focusing on not long-term and well thought out solutions, if they do so in the first place.

Earlier this week, a trade war broke about between the US and Canada. But the EU, a more Canada-aligned ally, appears to have a pretty muted response so far. So, in this video, we’re taking a look at the escalating US-Canada trade war, how it’s pushing Canada towards the EU and how the EU is responding.

Since Trump’s re-election, the relationship between MAGA and the European right wing populist parties has been turbulent. Our mission is to explain news and politics in an impartial, efficient, and accessible way, balancing import and interest while fostering independent thought.

TLDR is a completely independent & privately owned media company that’s not afraid to tackle the issues we think are most important. The channel is run by a small group of young people, with us hoping to pass on our enthusiasm for politics to other young people. We are primarily fan sourced with most of our funding coming from donations and ad revenue. No shady corporations, no one telling us what to say. We can’t wait to grow further and help more people get informed. Help support us by subscribing, engaging and sharing. Thanks!
