   Possible reform can include:

   1) Making the President elected by direct, popular vote like in Ireland.

   2) Allowing citizens to nominate candidates, rather than just the MPs.

   3) Allowing the Presidents to nominate themselves if they have not served out term-limit like in Ireland.

   This way you get a wider range of talents nad viewpoints into the system.

   For such a small country I think they should probably had let the president run elections again. With limited powers there's also a limited need to restrict that power. Here in Norway we got a King that wasn't even elected, but few people care since he doesn't really mess with politics anyhow, and mostly just supports the government or make vague speeches about how we all should care about each other.

    Erm… it's a coalition between two centrist parties, one of whom drifts centre-left and the other drifts centre-right. It's also a coalition that excludes both of the two main right-wing parties. I fail to see how it's a centre-right coalition.

    In Greece, it's the norm to have only one candidate. What usually happens when a president's term is over, is the government proposing a new candidate and that has to be approved by 200 of the 300 MPs. The governing party usually proposes a president that is an old politician from the second party. The governing party usually has 150+ MPs with the second party usually having about 50 MPs so together they agree on the president most of the time. If the parliament can't vote in a new president (like 2014) parliamentary elections would probably be called. The reason for that is supposedly that the parliament is so divided which is a threat to unity or something?
    The problem is that this can be used as a tool. For example in 2014 the governing party which was New Democracy proposed a president that was an old New Democracy politician (instead of proposing someone from the other side of the aisle). As expected the major opposition party SYRIZA didn't vote for him and then the country held parliamentary elections. Many people theorized that New Democracy did this on purpose to avoid 2015 which would have been a difficult year for them due to EU talks about debt. So they decided to let SYRIZA (which was leading the polls at the time) handle 2015 in a way by causing an election. I mean what government decides to hold elections when their major opposition is leading the polls?

    The reason Australia isn't a republic, yet, is that the referendum for it, in the '90s, would've had the president elected by Parliament as well. Most Australians want a directly elected president. I'm curious if that's something the Estonians have considered, and what the pros and cons would be.

    Ceremonial Presidents seem like such a waste of time. Same thing as a constitutional monarchy but without attracting any tourism.

    If Sweden ever becomes a republic, I hope we'll simply make the PM Head of State (or even better: go for direct elections for the position).

    It seems somewhat modelled on Irish presidential elections. Nomination restrictions (20 TDs/senators, or 4 councils, or former/retiring president) have meant many presidents were "agreed" by parties and there's no public vote. Where more than 1 candidate there's an election, using AV. With the emergence of a variety of parties, going back to "agreed" presidents isn't likely. In saying all this, my view is the Irish presidency should be abolished. While many have been popular with people, it's not a particularly democratic or accountable institution.

    I mean, Prime Ministers in Republics is a stupid idea… The process of electing them is long and complicated, when the executive branch really needs to be there every day, and not be tied down to the lazyness and procedures and partisanships of the legislator.

    Prime Minister is the role that needs to be revoked, replaced by the President, who shall be elected, not nominated by the legislator

    The president is largely decided before the voting via cross-party agreements. The voting itself is anonymous however, so when they actually get to vote, it is to see how solid were their previous agreements and party member loyalty.

    Well if the international viewers and Estonians themselves sees that the president is irrelevant, then reform estonia to constitutional monarchy 🙂

    My personal idea is that Estonia should become a constitutional monarchy and enter a personal union with the swedish crown. That will lead that the king of Sweden also will be king (or other royal suitble title) over Estonia. But becasue the monarchy will be constitutional, the king will only have cermeonial powers and estionians will keep thier bureaucracy and political sovereignty. Plus Estonia will officially be recognized as a nordic country :).

    Wrangling 21 signatures from members of parliament seems like a pretty low bar. If the rest of parliament genuinely couldn't agree on a candidate, I probably don't care about their preferences.

    The system seems to work as intended.

    Maybe an adjustment should be made so the minimum amount of candidates would be 2. If not enough candidates get the minimum required support in parliament candidates should be added that are below the requirement, from the most supported, to the second most. If there is a tie in support everyone who is tied should be added. Then when voting, if no-one gets the required votes each voting round the candidates with the fewest votes should be dropped for the next round until 2 are left or the minimum support is achieved.
