‘Miracle of the Andes’ plane crash survivor Fernando Parrado recalls tragedy
On the 50th anniversary of the ‘Miracle in the Andes’, Euronews spoke with Fernando Parrado, a survivor of the 1972 plane crash in which 16 people managed to stay alive for 72 days in temperatures below -30 degrees Celsius.

A rare moment on cameras at the global summit in Bishkek with Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev joking with Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian by inviting him not to drink the Georgian mineral water offered by the hosts, but to taste the one from Azerbaijan instead which he brought from home.

Nobody who did not expierienced the same as Nando Parrado and his mates did should judge them for eating human flesh. In my opinion Parrado is a great man!

Creo que Dios les permitió vivir esta prueba tan dura y difícil para ser un ejemplo de lucha, perseverancia, fe, amor y solidaridad para las presentes y futuras generaciones.Dios siga bendiciendo a estos 16 héroes. Well surviving in the ocean or in the desert is worse, at least there they had water from melted snow, in the desert you have nothing, and it’s much larger than the Andes, let’s say you fall in the Kalahari, there’s nothing there, and in the ocean there’s all this stuff plus sharks which can eat you, no water because it’s sea water etc.

Its a goosebumped to me. I still watch society of the snow, i cant get over. Its better than Titanic! My heart ache. Its true that God is in Mercy, but people will have to work on it! Praise God! Those people are so strong! Oh God You touch our hearts and You let the world to see this horrible moment. Im crying, everytime thats story come to mind. It so mezmerizing!

Well, I did know that Javier Methol had 4 children with his wife, who unfortunately was killed in the avalanche. After he was rescued, eventually he remarried and had 4 more children with his second wife.

Adoro escuchar a Nando Parrado, me resulta fascinante su voz, su modo de expresarse y todo lo interesante que siempre relata. Héroe indiscutido junto a Canessa de esa travesía imposible que ellos impulsados por una fuerza increíble, hicieron posible y así lograron que los 16 sobrevivientes sean rescatados. Ellos convirtieron una tragedia en milagro. No hay historia de supervivencia que me cautive más que esta.

I know cannibalism is wrong but the people they are were already dead.. u can’t judge unless u are out there in the snowy mountains for 2 and a half months with no food no water. Being stuck in avalanches and then basically being buried alive from it for 4 days. Having to walk 10 days in the cold stormy snow to get help from the Andes mountain to chile. Until u go through exactly what they went through you have absolutely no right to judge. The longest I went without eating is 3 days but at least I was drinking water these men didn’t even have water just snow. And they went 6 days without food. Can u imagine the pain? The thirst? The starvation?

I am in awe of this man and Roberto Canessa. Something that always disturbed me was how quickly Nando’s father moved on. He sold his clothes and his prized motorcycle within weeks of the plane’s disappearance. The man lost 3/4 of his family and was selling their stuff and remarrying yet Carlos Paez scoured the Andes using his resources for weeks looking for his son. Always bothered me.
