‘Ender’s Game’, the forthcoming screen adaptation of the sci-fi classic by Orson Scott Card, has run into trouble over the author’s anti-gay views.

While promoting the film at the Comic-Con International Convention in San Diego, director Gavin Hood distanced himself from the author’s recent homophobic statements.

He said: “It was with some dismay that I read Orson’s views. I don’t share his views. Obviously as a fan of the book it was quite a shock. So I completely understand – if you go on the internet you’ll see folks who love the book and are dismayed by the views of the author. But if we’re really honest, this is not unfortunately new. And Orson has written a great book. And that’s a hard thing for those of us who hold the opposite view to process.”

The film takes place after a horrific alien war, when a gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion. It features Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis and young star Asa Butterfield.

Butterfield said: “There is a huge fan base. And when I first started filming, it was one of the things both me and Gavin really wanted to appeal to. Of course an adaptation is never going to be 100 percent truthful to the story, but it’s as faithful as it can be. And I’m sure the fans are going to be pleased.”

Orson Scott Card’s 1985 military science-fiction novel does not focus on issues of homosexuality, but the author has been outspoken about the issue in recent years.

If he really doesn't agree with gay marriage and he believes it's wrong, don't judge. He's right.

Agree – and it is so damn HARD, because I love science fiction. But am not going, and have encourage my family and friends to boycott it, too.

Hee-hee – marriage equality has nothing at all to do with science, numbnuts (pseudo or otherwise). And sure, freedom of expression is very important in society. But then you must accept our freedom to disagree by calling for a boycott of people who want to discriminate in the name of freedom. Only fair, yes?

    Too late. Boycott.

If marriage were necessary for evolution for childbearing then other animals would have it, or go extinct. As for rights (another human invention) I'm all for them! Marriage equality allows for same sex couples to raise families and children with all the safeties and RIGHTS provided heterosexual couples. Denying these rights to same-sex couples is discrimination under the law; you can still do whatever you want in your church and say it's "god's will".

If your differing opinion is that someone should have fewer rights than you,be stripped of rights, or otherwise treated as inferior then YES your opinion is discriminatory.

Marriage equality is not based on pseudo-science or fallacies because marriage isn't based on science, it's a wholly human invention. As for denying gays the right to marry in America it's flat out discrimination because it creates a second class of citizens, violating the Constitutions equal protections clause.
