COVID-19: Can remote working make a happy and productive employee?

Published

on

The global pandemic has disrupted traditional ways of working, turning them upside down. Vast numbers of offices, once bustling with staff, have been left deserted and remote working has been normalised at lightning speed.

While big questions remain over the future of the health crisis, working models are likely to have changed forever.

Offices will not be consigned to history, but hybrid working is expected to grow, with staff splitting their time between the company workplace and home – or even in overseas locations.

From a business perspective, this could deliver big wins. Driving up efficiency and productivity and boosting diversity and equality, including a fairer gender balance. Many workers will also welcome greater flexibility and variety in their roles, which aid talent retention.

But at what cost? Communication and creativity may become casualties, with less face-to-face interaction, social opportunities and office spirit. This could stain the fabric of the company, striking at the very foundations on which its success has been built.

And how about those who struggle to work from home? Mental health, welfare, isolation and burnout will become more pressing issues, with hybrid working presenting new risks to individuals and the business. How do companies need to adapt to ensure that staff morale, motivation and performance is maintained and those who need help receive it? What about tax and pay issues relating to remote

More widely, what will be the impact on the design and use of office spaces? What new roles and functions will they take on? And what about the future of cities, towns and business parks? Places that have built infrastructure around a daily flow of workers coming in and out, day after day.
