Can you spot the signs of gun violence in this video by parents of Sandy Hook victims?

Published

on

The Sandy Hook Promise, an organisation set up by family members of those tragically killed during an elementary school shooting in Connecticut, USA, four years ago, has released a video urging people to spot the early signs of gun violence in schools.

In the video, the audience is introduced to high-school student Evan and follow him on a romantic adventure.

Meanwhile, in the background, another student appears to be planning a shooting.

“While you were watching Evan, another student was showing signs of planning a shooting. But no one noticed,” explained a spokesperson from the Sandy Hook Promise.

The powerful campaign aims to “educate and empower parents, schools and community organizations on how to prevent gun violence before it happens.”

As a millennial American man growing up in Houston Texas it breaks my heart to say how quick it was for me notice the shooter. As a teen I actually witnessed a kid was severely bullied (also note, I was your token “gay kid” which at the time still wasn’t as pc as it is today, and even I couldn’t compare to humiliation this guy endured from everyone. (With respect, he was what do,e would call socially awkward) Even coaches would pick on him. I remember always making it a point to acknowledge and say hello too him every class we had together because to be fair, he was a brilliant young man. However I noticed every time someone made a comment to him he put up a gun hand gesture to his head and pretend to make it go off. I finally told him that if he felt he was going to harm himself or others to seek help from the guidance counselors because they will hear you. Needless to say the young man was expelled and removed from our school because his gun went off in his locker when he was puttting his back pack in it.. he was made to feel that was his only way out… I hope wherever he is, he knows if I could go back and stand up for him.. I’d do it in a heart. Mitchell … always remember how special and bright you are brother.. I should’ve told you sooner

Some “signs” could have been just an interest for guns. Obviously, in this fake scenario they weren’t, but don’t assume someone’s going to shoot up a school just because they read about guns.

Could have been better if the shooter was deskwriter and instead of closing of the library closing the last message written was "don't come to school tomorrow."
Then a playback of how everytime Evan was looking for the deskwriter he looked at everyone except the deskwriter who he actively ignored.

Most signs were a lil too obvious and unrealistic. But the one where he sits alone and were he gets bullied should ve been more emphasised.
Most school shooters are created. And the creation, I believe, is mostly through being bullied and additionaly other neglect.

Making it harder for a high schooler to get his hands on a rifle and then also bring it to school should maybe be the place to start.
