Festival highlights the cost of Catholicism
Young and happy, pilgrims from the four corners of the Earth are gathered in Spain for the Roman Catholic church’s third World Youth Day, presided over by Pope Benedict XVI.
However many in Spain are irritated at the invasion of the happy clappers at a time of austerity and a decline in church attendance.
On arrival the young faithful are greeted by the organisers with a veritable goody bag of kit to help them enjoy the festival, a rucksack brimming with discount vouchers for lodgings, transport and food at a total cost of over four million euros.

euronews U talk – U-talk tackles sexism
“I am Ana from Lisbon. I would like to know how can we put an end to sexism and to the prevailing social differences between men and women which is an ongoing problem in the world?”
To answer Ana’s question U-talk asked Belgian feminist and member of the ‘Dare to be feminist’ collective Laure Juteau to comment:
“Sexism is all about putting people in boxes as soon as we meet them, labelled either ‘man’ or ‘woman’. As soon as they deviate from that, even a little, they are quickly reminded to get back into line and play their role.

The World Youth Day is totally self sufficient, the host country just pay the security. We pay, who want to go pay for their subscription.

The government is doing a portion of it. I know people that are there, and they have to pay out of pocket to be at this event and it is a not a cheap price either. And yes, the people I know and where they are from, the church has helped with the expenses. Also, if Spain did not want they should have not asked to host it. It just like the Olympics, people from other countries meet and decide who holds the next Olympics. Lastly, the Spaniards are mad at more than just funding for this event…
