the Norwegians and other Swedes are always in self-satisfaction, self-proclamation, self-admiration, incredible to read them in the comments!:

the reality of the “French, Portuguese, Spanish model?” own your beautiful villa with swimming pool and earn 1000 euros per month and no more (to escape their predatory states").Joy, happiness, life expectancy at the highest…

    simple and feasible in 2024-2044!

I think that it means we need more far right politics, sadly but this looks like truth.

It's almost like the whole austerity thing was complete bs that stagnated our economies and forced millions of Southern Europeans to leave their countries in search of a job northwards. This said, gdp is not a good indicator, as the average person in any of these countries still struggles to find a job that pays decently. The rich are just becoming richer.

  7. @Vindex80

They are (overall) economies dependent on services and tourism, low added value industries requiring mostly unqualified workers thus sensible to economic crisis due to the little complexity replacing new, unskilled workers and with longer duration periods of crisis therefore.
This said, the last 2020 crisis and the restrictions to travel hurt these economies harder than their northern counterparts and this "growth" you are talking about is just the "rebound" of the pre pandemic levels, years behind northern economies.
This is an allegory of a cycling race where cyclists behind are faster on flat ground than the cyclists slowly climbing the mountain slowly ahead.
On top of that, all this "growth" is sustained on public debt while it lasts.
    Sheer decadence of Europe.

It's not surprising. Southern Europe was disproportionately hurt by, for them, a contractionary monetary policy designed to cater for Germany's economy more than theirs. The recent inflation has, for Southern Europe, meant a reasonable monetary policy which has allowed them to actually approach full employment.

The euro is stupid and no national debt is not a problem if properly invested. Im happy if actual material conditions of southern european countries are improved. That might slow or hinder the rise of fascism there.

The fact that you can casually refer to our four nations as 'Southern European PIGS' without facing repercussions is baffling to me. It’s even more discriminatory when Ireland is deliberately excluded, turning the term into an obvious racist dog whistle.

The EU is also about creating living conditions that are as equal as possible. So far it has only been possible in some areas such as affordable healthcare. But explain why was the UK shown in the graphic? It neither has the euro nor is it a member of the EU.

It seems like it would be a good thing to have countries who are doing well economically are able to help balance those that are having a slow year or two. Those countries can do the same to help when their economies are doing well again and the others have slowed. Just as long as there aren't any countries who never add to the system and always take.

The real issue is the building of wealth. Corporate real estate purchases of single family homes have forced entire populations into becoming permanent renters in many countries. It’s a global issue. No rise in wages will replace the stability of housing. Corporations price gouging while receiving millions in subsidies. Parasitic dynamic of these monopolized industries to the consumers they rely on. This is techno feudalism. 🫴

  32. @Almirante1741

    April 16, 2024 at 7:36 am

The GDP is a bad metric, specially with Southern Europe. Our GDP is inflated by our huge debt, and the productivity of our economies has not grown since the 1990's. If you compare the median salaries adjusted to purchasing power, you would see that we are in a much worse situation than Northern Europe.

  33. @Kris_96

    April 16, 2024 at 7:36 am

People saying that the graphs show it's going but it doesn't mean life is better, yes that is true, however just because you have it bad but the graph goes up, it doesn't mean the other countries have it any better with the graph not going up. It's easier for an economy to start doing better when they aren't that "developed", compared to those who were already enjoying good growth etc etc. Those countries get hit harder and have it harder to recoup. No one has it easy.

  34. @r-pu4md

    April 16, 2024 at 7:36 am

In Spain these GDP figures are inflated due to a huge debt growth and lackluster growth compared to what was before the pandemic. If we look at before 2020 we have barely even grown, and are losing international relevance each day. Also, the wealth is not really reaching the masses, with higher costs of living and a housing crisis, and a government that seems to hate the middle class and small entrepreneurs.

  35. @euroschmau

    April 16, 2024 at 7:36 am

This year will feature my fourth vacation to Spain since 2021. Spain has it all and is well deserving of my tourist dollars.

  36. @user-vd9nt6ze4c

    April 16, 2024 at 7:36 am

As a Spaniard I can tell you that this growth isnt being percieved by its citizens and all is getting more and more decadent, the government is still wasing a lot of money and increasing the taxes more and more meanwhile they make up the statistics such as the unemployment one. So we don't really know whats the real state of the economy, sounds like something that a totalitarian state would do . I am disappointed on how things are going here and planning to move as soon as i can…

Since Trump’s re-election, the relationship between MAGA and the European right wing populist parties has been turbulent. In this video, we’re taking a look at this relationship and how it’s now changing.

Our mission is to explain news and politics in an impartial, efficient, and accessible way, balancing import and interest while fostering independent thought.

TLDR is a completely independent & privately owned media company that’s not afraid to tackle the issues we think are most important. The channel is run by a small group of young people, with us hoping to pass on our enthusiasm for politics to other young people. We are primarily fan sourced with most of our funding coming from donations and ad revenue. No shady corporations, no one telling us what to say. We can’t wait to grow further and help more people get informed. Help support us by subscribing, engaging and sharing. Thanks!
