Paris attacks: Crowd erupts into panic at memorial, false alarm
Hundreds of people who had been gathered at vigils at Place de la Republique and the Carillon cafe dispersed suddenly on Sunday (November 15) evening as sudden bangs scared crowds, a Reuters witness said.
As unexplained explosive noises sounded, people suddenly all began running away from the place de la Republique square and past the Carillon restaurant, one of the locations where gunmen opened fire, where people who were paying tribute suddenly began running away and screaming.

As much as I can understand the panic reflex…(I was shot and my partner killed in a gay bashing in West Hollywood, years ago and every time I hear a gun go off or a rifle, during hunting season here where I live now, in Italy, where firearms are only allowed during hunting season, I tense up and feel anxious)….the damage that those who ran, in a panic, over lit candles, glass, each other, could have caused more damage than a terrorist might have. We have all seen panic runs, especially in the US on Black Friday when the doors are opening and people push and shove and trample others to get in first and buy a TV or whatever…and some are left on the ground, broken, no one helping them. I saw it happen, myself, 2x at a Best Buy in PA, 2 years in a row 11 and 12 years ago. Yes, obviously try and protect yourself but don't do it at the expense of others, leaving them grounded to fend for themselves with broken legs, necks, arms, and in this case above, some ran with their pants legs on fire…which I learned about from my cousins who were there. Fear makes us do stupid things and these people battling each other to flee only made things worse, not better….when there was nothing to fear in the first place….Though it was a better reason, fear of a terror attack, than to purchase a 41" TV 50% off!
