Daniel Radcliffe turns hairy poet in his latest onscreen adventure, portraying American existentialist Allen Ginsberg in “Kill Your Darlings”.

It is a first film for director John Krokidas. He throws the real-life Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac into a fiction, getting them to meet up at Columbus university in 1944 in the wake of a campus murder. The three young icons-to-be then go on an odyssey of booze, sex and Beat generation hipsterdom.

Made cheaply and shot fast in just 24 days in new York City, it is the polar opposite of the bulk of Radcliffe’s work.

“You always want a little bit more time, maybe. I do think coming from ‘Potter’ where there were many amazing things you can say about ‘Potter,’ but you can’t say that we were fast. We weren’t. And for me it is a pleasure to be out of that and into a much quicker paced way of working,” he says.

Most critics have praised the performances, especially from the chemistry whipped up by Dane DeHaan and Radcliffe, who seems to be having trouble keeping his kit on, post Harry Potter. This film is no exception.

“It is one of those things that everyone clearly expects me to say, ‘Oh my god it was so weird, I was near another naked man, what the hell,’ but actually it was just a scene and I am an actor doing a job and I approached it like any other scene. Apart from a bit of giggly awkwardness, that comes when you take off your clothes in front of a lot of people that you barely know, it was fine,” he smiles.
