Security was tight round the courthouse in China’s Jinan city where the long awaited trial of disgraced Chinese politician, Bo Xilai, has finally begun.

The man once tipped for the highest level of government is charged with bribery, corruption and abuse of power.

The proceedings are due to last only one day and he is expected to be found guilty. Bo could face a death sentence though life imprisonment is more likely.

The trial is connected to the that of his wife’s . Last year Gu Kailai was accused, tried and convicted of the murder of British businessman Neil Haywood, a family friend.

Bo supporters have camped outside the courthouse. He was and is a popular politician, known for his crackdown on crime and a drive to promote China’s old communist values.

His backers have denounced the trial as politically motivated, claiming Bo is the loser of a ruthless power struggle.
