They could gain independence if they convinced just 10% of another group to vote for independence
People of European origin only make up 24% (2019) of the islands population and not everybody of this 24% can vote

  9. @milibibi2152

UK left their colonies. France wanted referendum but they waited 9 years to organize the référendum. Just enough time to send more french settlers in new caledonia. Because french have lot of advantages when the are send in new caledonia. New caledonia is a settlement colony, France waited that kanak became minorities for the referendum. More settlers less kanaks. New caledonia will end up like Australia or hawai.

Let's sum it up : kanaks want to decide who has the right to vote based on the race ? Yeah, I think France should stay…

When a French person tries to whine with a sense of superiority about the American and British empires, I just pity them for their absolute denial with their own empire's existence.

    May 17, 2024 at 11:27 am

Once they attain independence the Kanak people will quickly realise that it's not what it's touted to be. N.Caledonia is a tiny island with almost zero resources, they should stick with France since they will have access to the West and subsidies from Paris. If they leave France they will just become another Haiti

Those extreme Kanaks also disrepecting the Melanesians from Wallis and Futuna (20% of the population) like the most basic crass racists are ridiculous. Bringing shame to Polynesians whatever your views on their independance is. Also do we realise this expansion of voting rights in LOCAL elections (not even regional, national or referendums) for people who have been there for over 30 years seems legitimate? They pay local taxes yet cannot vote?!

Racial Socialism is a disease everywhere it goes, and now it’s infected the brains of the Kanaks.

Daily reminder that Hitler was also a leftist/Racial Socialist.

  33. @danielstewart8339

    May 17, 2024 at 11:27 am

This channels “what if the worst happens” storyline lately is getting more annoying. Saying “its hard to see…” is not the cover you think it is.

  34. @robertchautardjensen6846

    May 17, 2024 at 11:27 am

The Kanaks are swimming in self pity and sour grapes, the three agreed referendums have been run and each referendum returned a no vote to independence.

In the meantime the Kanaks reached out to Azerbaijan, a country with a record of genocide against the Armenians.

The Kanaks have a small number of trouble makers in some of the tribes and socialist revolution philosophies in some of the population in the North of New Caledonia.

The Kanaks need to return to peaceful co-existence and step back from the abyss of revolution. Neither the Kanaks or the Caldosh will resolve their differences with weapons.

  35. @NiskaMagnusson

    May 17, 2024 at 11:27 am

every people should have the right to their own native land, ironically a lot of Europeans in the big cities are thinking the same thing, seems the issue as it is 90% of the time is those in power, rather than the culture as a whole.

  36. @franckcolomb5579

    May 17, 2024 at 11:27 am

If France had copied what Brits did in Australia, US, Canada, Nz etc… we wouldnt have this native problem on the island.
    Too late now

  37. @stephen_ne8406

    May 17, 2024 at 11:27 am

those racist new caledonians! they need to embrace their multi culturalism !!!

  38. @cofa4011

    May 17, 2024 at 11:27 am

Just remind me… When will the British let Scotland take it's deserved independence ? Yeah… Shush. Kanaks (at this time) are actually fighting democracy, not France per say.

  39. @prplt

    May 17, 2024 at 11:27 am
