Such a pity, once again the people of Northern Ireland are being made to suffer. Trouble with both the EU and the UK is that neither of you have any idea what you are doing, just fat cat politicians playing with peoples lives. Absolute greed. Honestly I am glad we left the EU, the true colours are being shown.

"Both sides on track for a trade war" is totally wrong, as the UK would trigger a trade war with both the EU and the US. The divided kingdom of lil Britain would become a lot more of a joke and go broke real quick. The lies of the Tories are already causing violent tensions and terrorism in NI. The corrupt Tories need to be stoped.

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

The EU have NEVER been flexible! Non Elected Commissiiners have done nothing but DEMAND that THE UK AGREE TO THEIR RULES.

  7. @donedwardchapman4514

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

What consequences is Cescovic talking about ? More threats and no moves by the EU still, and wanting the UK to move and the EU NOT. Throw out the trade agreement, it wasn't finallised until April so still time !!

Clowns are running the show in Britain. No wonder the EU looks totally baffled.

  15. @simonrolph3882

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

What consequences? Why would there be a trade war if the UK invoked article 16? It is a legal mechanism in the withdrawal agreement! It has nothing to do with the TCA which was signed a year later.

  16. @Natashahoneypot

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

  21. @billyandrew

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

The whole intent is to trigger article 16, as a part of the Tory Smoke and Mirrors Show, in order to deflect the public scrutiny from their sleaze.

  22. @tonytilley5876

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

Yes serious CONSEQUENCES for them as they had no intention of negotiating any deal that was beneficial to the UK

  23. @bricktop4000

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

Just more EU propaganda aimed at their own inhabitants to salve the fiasco of Britain leaving the EU.
What this obvious garbage journalism doesnt tell you is yes, Britain WILL invoke Article 16 as the security of the NI border does NOT concern the EU.

This is entirely for EU consumption, the EU must put up this facade of how bad Brexit is for the UK, (which it isnt) and to curtail Polexit and Grexit.
But, the average EU citizen has been bombarded with garbage journalism from Euronews for the past 5 years.
No, the UK does NOT have empty food shelves, No – we do not grow our own food, that rots unpicked in fields, and NO, we dont do manufacturing or exports either. The truth is, the UK imports 60% of its food from Spain, All our cars are from European factories.
The EU will bend over backwards to prevent the loos of these vital exports to EU coffers, which the UK can just buy elsewhere and put huge tarriffs on EU goods.
Do not forget the UK was the 2nd biggest NET contributor to EU coffers. That is a HUGE shortfall to make up unless the EU tightens its belt.

  24. @perro0076

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

Gents. Don’t fret. This article 16 will never be invoked. First, there’s the ‘notification’ (unilateral affair as we know), then there’s a period of ‘consultation’ (not unilateral) and finally a ‘review’ (not unilateral either). But first that unelected bureaucrat Frost has to come up with a water-tight ‘serious’ argument complete with tangible evidence that the deal that he signed is having a detrimental effect. The trouble for him is that Westminster over the years, if not centuries, have treated NI as a family member they would rather keep in a dungeon somewhere. So anything NI has now is bound to be better than what they had before. Additionally, NI economy is already doing better than England’s. So, he doesn’t have a dog’s chance of coming up with something ‘serious’ in the context of article 16. Calling that article 16 would be a tactical disaster and it would only lead to a political dead-end because in the end he will be hit for 6 and laughed out of the park. And right THERE is where the SERIOUS consequences are. Like a boa constrictor, room to manoeuvre will be restricted and it will lead to a political death. Let alone the damage to the UK that is already fighting a losing battle to keep its place of relevance in the world.

Let’s not forget either that the deal is not something you can walk away from. It is in law. It was passed by parliament and the lords. It is up there internationally recognized. The EU has already said in no uncertain terms it is no longer negotiable. The ‘negotiations’ they are doing now are within the deal/framework. Also, it is not NI that is prodding the alligator, they wanted to remain in the EU remember? It is Westminster that is the trouble child.

Last but not least. The NI peace agreement is one of the US's biggest achievements. They will not let someone as incompetent as Frost and Johnson ruin it. They will not stand for it.

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

Johnson is about to start a war in northern Ireland then blame the EU , its one way of taking himself out of the horrible situation he put himself into

  30. @dorothyhall4184

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

Slap tariffs, slap tariffs this what EU are about no thought for NI Mr Frost no alternative but to evoke Acticle 16 all GOOD FAITH gone out of window.

  31. @Rheinmeister09

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

Got to ask yourself, what is their end goal? How can anyone trust them to negotiate in good faith at this point? They say one thing today and the complete opposite or something new tomorrow and the EU has gone as far as they can go with compromises. What exactly has Frosh and BoJo done to meet them part of the way? Meanwhile the ordinary Joe on the street is getting screwed with the possibility of either hardline republicans or loyalists reverting to old ways in the North.

  32. @Jonnythebaker

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

Protocol warning firstly by Irish prime minister, then by ex prime minister John Major, then by EU minister. I suspect a europhile cartel firing warnings simultaneously. We are not fooled.

  33. @CollieJenn

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

Why hire non EU nationals as a presenter when there are many excellent English speaking Irish TV professionals.

  35. @robertcornelius8056

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

Funny ! The EU already did try to trigger it with zero consultation and had to row back faster than the French army

  36. @edgardebruin8398

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

for anyone who does business with the UK better prepare for a trade war.

  37. @philiproscoe2968

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

whats the point of having an Article that allows either party to withdraw under certain prescribed circumstances, then saying if one party choses to use it, there will be "serious consequences" ?

  38. @user-xv4id9xx7u

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

The EU has no power, it's a weak entity pretending to be more than it is. Its threats are worthless.

  39. @user-vt1gu6qz3f

    May 19, 2024 at 12:09 pm

I thought EU invoked article 16 in the early months without even informing and discussing. At least UK are being courteous & discussing before hand to try and find a way forward !
