Taming cobras and drinking their blood, US marines learn to survive in the jungle

Published

on

While the rest of world was celebrating Valentine’s Day on February 14, military personnel from the US and 29 other countries were in Thailand attending the 36th jungle survival exercise ‘Cobra Gold’.

The first 10-day military training operation in 1982 saw only participants from Thailand and the US taking part, but the event has now evolved into the biggest multilateral military exercise in the Asia-Pacific.

It aims to promote international cooperation and regional stability through events like a senior leader seminar, civic assistance projects in Thai communities and a variety of field training exercises.

About 100 US Marines learned jungle survival techniques such as how to avoid poisonous snakes like the King Cobra and survival techniques such as consuming scorpions or drinking snake’s blood when water is in short supply.

Baguette “bomb” explodes into diplomatic row

Published

on

http://www.euronews.com/ From Paris a wind of fury has stirred, directed across the channel at Britain. French Prime Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault has accused The Economist of resorting to,”excess” to boost its sales.

The weekly magazine’s front cover trumpeted its main article with the picture of seven baguettes tied together like a bomb. It has now exploded into a diplomatic row.

Francois Hollande’s economic reforms have come under attack, with The Economist claiming they could jeopardise the future of the euro because they are not ambitious enough and saying the financial markets could turn against France.

“I am shocked because it’s not the image I want to give of my country. At the same time I share some of the magazine’s opinions. I’m quite worried about the economic situation at the moment. I don’t see how the current measures will get us out of this,” said one woman.

There was some good news this week for the French President with data showing the country’s economy grew unexpectedly by 0.2 percent. French public spending accounts for 56 percent of the GDP the highest share in the eurozone while public debt has reached 90 percent of GDP.

French firms, says The Economist are burdened by overly rigid labour and product market regulation with the economy stagnant warning it may tip into recession this year.

For years France has been losing competitiveness to Germany, points out the article challenging Holland to show enough, “boldness and grit” to reform France. It comes just a few days after the president vowed to reform at his own pace

The French employers’ organisation Medef weighed into the argument saying the government had already taken measures to restore competitiveness.

US Election: Third presidential debate

Published

on

http://www.euronews.com/ The crucial swing state of Florida will be the battleground for the third and final US presidential debate.

Commentators generally agree that Republican Candidate Mitt Romney was stronger in their first exchange, while Obama was stronger in the second, and many tip the incumbent for this showdown which will focus on foreign policy.

“He has been very successful at taking out most of the leadership of Al-Qaida in Pakistan and Yemen in particular, including Osama Bin Laden, of course. He has also reduced the USD military footprint in the Middle East,” said Jordan Tama of the School of International Service, American University.

This was always going to be a tough debate for Mitt Romney who makes his strongest performances when he can talk about domestic issues and the economy.

It is in foreign affairs that Barack Obama has made his mark, moving far away from the policies of the previous government as James Mann of the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies explains:

“The Bush vision was to build up so much power that a leader of another country would be crazy to even try to match it. The Obama administration has pursued a much more modest version of American power”

Some might be watching for certain issues which are close to their heart here, but the candidates’ policies on things like the economy are much more likely to affect the vote.

For many there will only one point to look out for, who is the most likely to keep them safe?

There is no question that Obama, after the Bush years, has improved America’s standing in the world. He remains immensely popular in Western Europe, but considerably less in Eastern Europe. And in the Middle East, he is regarded as just another US president who failed to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
